Book Reviews of Deadman's Poker: A Novel

Book Review: Disappointment
Summary: 3 Stars

I too agree with the one star reviewers. I found the story entertaining, hence the 3 rating. I have read all of Swain's books and found them entertaining and even educational. I was so disappointed to arrive at the end of the Deadman's Poker and not have the story end. It's a pity that Swain and his publishers succumbed to tricking the public, without even a notice in the book that this was "Part 1" . I have the privilege in living in the part of Florida in which Swain lives and have enjoyed the locale presentation- he was even at a local bookstore signing books.Too bad he did not give consideration to his readers. I will probably buy the "ending book" of Deadman's Bluff just to get closure but will not continue to purchase his books. Too bad- he did have a talent.

Book Review: Excellent book for a Poker Player
Summary: 5 Stars

I play a LOT of poker and have read so many instructional poker books it silly.

Sometimes I just don't want to read How-To books about poker but have never found any poker fiction to past my time. Deadmans poker was perfect.

It's actually more of a detective novel that involves poker and gambling scams. You won't learn any new poker tricks but it is all based in Las Vegas and the World Poker Showdown that is taking place and the guy winning is cheating. You follow the owner from Grift Sense as he tries to solve the mystery.

This is a very good book for somebody looking for poker fiction and the writing is easy on the eyes with a little and you will learn a few bar tricks to play on your friends.

Book Review: Colorful characters
Summary: 5 Stars

All of Jim Swain's books are real page turners. Deadman's Poker is no different. I find the setting of the World Poker Tournament interesting, and main character Toni Valentine's love interest entertaining. As always, I find the book hard to put to down, wondering "who done it"; but as thrilling and entertaining as these books are, there is a deeper, tender quality to the writing in that even the crooks and bad guys have humanizing qualities. Perhaps that is what draws one in to these novels over and over again. And there is the truly endearing Toni Valentine - I am so attached to this character and see each book a chance to catch up and see what is going on in Valenines life. Deadman's Poker is another winner!!

Book Review: Ante Up For These Great Reads
Summary: 5 Stars

We discovered Deadman's Bluff and Dead Man's Poker on a book display at Barnes and Noble. It turned out to be a terific summer read - fast paced and intriging. So much so that we have searched out his prior books (there's five) and found them all to be as entertaining. His subject matter of cons and scams are woven throughtout the adventures of Tony Valentine! He shares a window into a world we are all curious about. Do you reconize a con? Or a "tell" in Poker? Can you spot a cheat at Black Jack? Or a swithch at the Crap table? No? Jim Swain can and does! Fantastic reading and worth our time! He leaves you wanting more from these characters! Ante Up! You'll enjoy these books!

Book Review: Deadman's Poker by James Swain
Summary: 5 Stars

This is Swain's sixth Tony Valentine novel about cons and corruption in casinos across the country (and across the globe). I simply cannot put them down; they are great stories peopled with fascinating but very believable characters of all stripes. You know people like them -- at least some of them, anyway! Swain's knowledge of the casino world is probably more extensive than anyone's -- anywhere. "Deadman's Poker" is coupled with its successor, "Deadman's Bluff;" while it wrapped up most of the loose ends, "Poker" left several hanging to lead you into "Bluff." You can jump into the series anywhere, but if you like this one, go back to "Grift Sense" and read your way through.
