Book Reviews of Deadman's Poker: A NovelBook Review: Another Winner Summary: 5 Stars
I picked this book up because of my interest in trickery, cons, poker, and mystery fiction - all of which are found here in abundance. What surprised me, is how laugh out loud funny the book is. There's a great character--an geriatric cowboy gambler and scammer named Rufus Steel--who takes on some rival gamblers with series of increasingly unlikely wagers: the last being that he can out race a thoroughbred horse in the 100 year dash! How he pulls these stunts off is one of the pleasures of the book. And the main plot is full of great hooks. Since this is a two part novel we end up knowing who done it (I think), but not how. Can't wait to find out.
Book Review: Can't Beat This Pair! Summary: 5 Stars
There's no dead money on Jim Swain's latest pair of books in his Tony Valentine series. Deadman's Poker, followed by Deadman's Bluff, is a one-two made hand yarn of scams, intrigue, humor and emotion this reader has come to love in Swain's novels. Leisure time for reading is rare for me, but Swain never disappoints with a story I can cast in my mind, and read in days, no matter how complex. I burned through the pages of both Deadman's Poker & Bluff in just 4 days, enjoying every minute. As always, he does leave me wanting at the end...for the next Tony Valentine story!
Book Review: A great adventure! Summary: 5 Stars
Tony Valentine is back swinging in Las Vegas in Deadman's Poker, another page-turner from James Swain. I'm not a gambler or a poker player, but I find the action and scams set in the dark side of Las Vegas delightful reading. I've read all of the Tony Valentine books, and each is a funny and fascinating adventure in human nature.
I'm now reading Deadman's Bluff, and I'm happy that the story is continued from Deadman's Poker. Compared to the previous hardcover editions, both paperbacks offer 700 pages of enjoyment for half price. Highly recommended.
Book Review: Best on poker scams but with a fictional plot Summary: 5 Stars
Please see my other review in Deadman's Bluff (you have to buy both for complete story line) Only available in paperback and not hardback.
The poker craze has a lot of how-to books out there, but the two Deadman paperbacks give you a poker flavor at the same time with an action packed plot.
The Tony Valentine character flows easily through the story, and I suggest perhaps if you like these two books, one goes back and starts with Swain's first book, 'Grift Sense'.
Good reading!
Book Review: You can bet on Swain's books! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought both books, "Deadman's Poker", and "Deadman's Bluff" at the same time. I'm glad I did! I got the continuing story of Tony Valentine and his son working one of their most dangerous investigations they have ever had. Great insights to Las Vegas and gambling in general. The tips and stories of other scams were a great addition! Can't wait for the next Tony Valentine adventure!
