Book Reviews of Dear JohnBook Review: Sweet Story, Silly Ending (spoilers included) Summary: 3 Stars
I really loved the relationship between Savannah and John, but I felt that the end of the story was only written to be dramatic. I'm sure similar stories have happened in real life with real soldiers, but I was hoping for a much happier ending. This summary has spoilers for those of you who plan to watch the movie Dear John (coming out soon). I'm sure the acting will be awesome in the film, but the book was way too drawn out. Savannah decides that she can no longer wait for John when he reups back into the army after Sept. 11. Her heart breaks every day that he is gone and she has no idea if he'll come back. JUST before his career ends with the army (he becomes an army lifer because he doesn't know what else to do with himself), she marries a friend that she grew up with. She writes John the titled letter that ends the relationship and saying she'll understand if he never wants to speak to her again. She also lives with guilt the whole time she's married before he comes home to say his official goodbye from her life. John comes home to bury his father (so sad) and goes to see her once more. The chemistry is still there and they get closure to the relationship. He still loves her and she still loves him, but now she's married. Her husband is dying of cancer and they have very little money to finance his medical help. She's been married less than two years and thinks he might die. The husband tells John to take care of her after he dies and that's that. John cashes in his dad's coin collection that was left to him and sends all of the money anonymously to finance the husband's bills. The husband makes a full recovery with an experimental drug and goes on to live with Savannah happily ever after. Meanwhile John is watching in the distance making sure she is happy with the life she chose away from him. He did the right thing by letting her go, but I couldn't help thinking that he would never go on with his life and he reminded me of a stalker the way he watched her at the end. I was glad that John wasn't killed in battle and it was awesome that he got to see her once more before leaving her for good, but Savannah couldn't make up her mind of her feelings between her husband and John. That to me seemed out of character for this woman and ridiculous. I also don't think she married for the right reasons if she held guilt. That's not something you enter a marriage with....but again she was inlove with an army soldier and she had no idea if he would live or die from one day to the next. I can't relate to that either. The emotions displayed in this book didn't hit me as strongly as I expected them to, instead of feeling sad or touched I only felt annoyed at the end of this story.
