Book Reviews of Dear JohnBook Review: A masterpiece! Summary: 5 Stars
What a beautiful book!!! This is a masterpiece that will be read for generations to come; of that I am sure. No book has touched me in such a way before...no book has ever brought me so close to tears! In a way I am speechless and at a loss for words, for I honestly did not expect this book to be that great...and with no exaggeration, such a treasure.
This is my second Nicholas Sparks book. The first one I tried to read was `True Believer', but I gave up on it after about forty pages or so. I actually started reading it while on an airplane on my way to London, England. Maybe it was the rumbling sound of the aircraft engines; the low light; or maybe it was the low pressure. Either way, I was not captivated by the book for lack of concentration.
When I was recommended `Dear John' by my bookstore, I thought long and hard before buying it. I don't know what made me buy it. Was it the insistence of the bookseller, or maybe some other unknown benevolent force acting upon me? One thing is for sure: I am glad I read it, and thank God I was destined to.
This is a book you should definitely know nothing about prior to reading it. By that I mean don't read reviews or a summary of the book (except mine of course). Don't even read the back cover or the inside jacket. It is better you have no expectations or any idea what the story is about to really fully enjoy it.
What makes this book unique is its down-to-earth nature. The characters are real and you will easily fall in love with them. They actually come alive, and you will feel as if they are sitting right there with you in your living room (or wherever else you are reading). Not many books can succeed in this.
The reading is easy with no difficult vocabulary, making it easy to understand and follow. You are never at any point bogged down by difficult or unnecessary words. All the words seem to fit together snuggly, and you'll find yourself lost into the story.
What is love? Did any of us really experience love? Are we able to love the happiness of another more than our own? I usually don't read many fiction books for I never really learn much from them (at least from the latest books I have been reading). But this book taught me so much about myself that it was like looking through a mirror. `Hey', I said to myself, `What are you doing with your life? Go out and meet all the wonderful people out there full of love.' Yes, indeed, there are good people out there, and lately I have become withdrawn into my own little world. This book made me want to go out again into the world and meet the people who make a difference to others, and like them, to be motivated to make a difference to others as well. Such people exist. They are out there.
This book also made me love fiction again. One thing is for sure: not only will I reread `True Believer', I will check out all of Sparks' books. This writer is a magician with words.
I will also from now on try to give books I read more of a chance before giving up on them. Maybe instead of 40 pages I should read 80 before I give up. But give up I will, for I know there is somewhere another magical book waiting for me.
I loved this book because I related to it, and it seemed like it was written just for me. I also read it at the right time in my life and the right place, if you know what I mean. Should I say more?
I don't want to say too much for I don't want to ruin this book for you. Read it! The ending is one of the best in any fiction book I have read! If you feel tears fall down your face, don't be surprised; you are not the only one! And like so many other things in life, we never are alone!
...and O, one more thing: all aspiring writers should read this book!
