Book Reviews of Deep Storm: A Novel

Book Review: Extraordinary book!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a book that I found so interesting, with a unique plot, that I read it more than once over a week or so. This for me is so rare as to happen only a few times in my life. Possibly the writer himself didn't think it was anything special beyond 'another book', but if so I only hope he produces more books with this kind of shock value.

It has lots of atmosphere, plenty of strong characterization, but little of it is predictable and not all villains end up villains etc. All this made it even better when, toward the end, we find out what's really down there, and it just couldn't be any better. Naturally no spoilers from me, but get a copy and read it! It fits very well into many important topics today and this book won't rapidly become obsolete, unlike thrillers with Iraq as the centerpiece, for example. Also, if "Deep Storm" is not made into a movie, this will be Hollywood's loss- and our loss too.

Book Review: Can't Put It Down! Save it for a Weekend Because You'll Definitely Stay Up Late.
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book in a single day it was so good! I couldn't put it down! If you are looking for good science fiction, and are having trouble finding good books out there that you haven't read, then look no farther, because you will be thoroughly satisfied after reading this one.

I don't want to describe anything more than what the book description says because it will spoil it, but it does kind of remind you of the "Abyss" movie and "Sphere". Also, what I will say is each chapter leaves you wanting to read the next one, and the mysteries surrounding the story keep you fixed all the time accelerating to the end.

---*** THE BOTTOM LINE ***---
* This is a MUST get book, it's that entertaining.
* You won't want to stop reading it, so save it for vacation or a weekend when you can stay up late and won't worry about not getting any sleep.

Book Review: Deep Storm-Pretty Deep Read
Summary: 5 Stars

Ok, this is the first solo Child book I've read, that said it was hard to put down. I've stopped the world to read all of the others he has co-written with Preston. Maybe that's why there were a few minor things that bothered me, he didn't have anyone to bounce the idea/story with, as you do with a co-author so maybe that's why they were there. I think some of the medical stuff needed a bit more research....MRI, CT, but no EEG?? And interns in a super secret atmosphere. And what about that doctor he specialized in everything, and that was some travel on the part of the bullet. Like I said though the idea was great! The location was great! There were some moments surely that keep you guessing and wondering what next!!!?? Overall I enjoyed the read, thought it was worth the time and glad I took it. Not giving anything away it's kind of an interesting theory!

Book Review: Well-written, but pedestrian plot
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm a big Preston/Child fan and have also read all of their solo novels. I'd agree with the other reviews that this is Child's best solo work so far. The characters are mostly realistic and likeable. The dialogue is not cheesy or over the top with the possible exception of the crazed Commander Koriolis. But there was just not enough originality in the story. It reminded me of Crichton's "Sphere" and the overzealous (and cliched) marines were straight from "The Abyss". The book starts out well with some intriguing hints at finding Atlantis. The historical research at the churches adds to the mystery. But in the end, what they find at the bottom is pretty typical (and mundane) sci-fi stuff. The story is very linear with little or no plot twists. The suspense is there-barely. But it is an interesting read and better than most of the other books in this genre.

Book Review: Not a Deep Connection.
Summary: 3 Stars

I just finished reading "Deep Storm". It was okay, but not great.

There was a very...clinical element in the way the story was told. We never really find out any personal details about the characters. As a result, the story ends without the reader forming a substantial emotional bond with any of the characters.

While this doesn't prevent the story from being told, it could definitely have been told better. Adding personal details about the characters is just one way this could have been accomplished. Another missed opportunity was adding more details to those characters who said they were hearing voices. It would've been interesting to eavesdrop on those [Spoiler Warning!] voices/alien transmissions.

The book was a quick read, but unfortunately nothing that I would be motivated to read a second time.
