Book Reviews of Deep Storm: A Novel

Book Review: Tempest in a teapot
Summary: 3 Stars

This was the first Lincoln Childs book I read after discovering the Pendergast novels, co-authored with long-time collaborator Douglas Preston, a long time ago. The Pendergast books are great - a real hoot. I bought this on the basis of my great appreciation for the Pendergast books and the publisher's blurb on the book jacket. While I'm not screaming for my money back, I have to say that the book was just OK. Mr. Childs can write (of course) and there are some interesting concepts here, - and of course the pacing is good, but the verisimilitude is lacking and in the end it just wasn't that good of a story. I'll try another of his, of course, but if you are not already a fan, this is surely not the place to start.

Book Review: Great read
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a great fan of the Preston/Child series of books and wish someone would make movies of them. Can't you see Johnny Depp playing Agent Pendergast? As single authors, both do a good job, although they are really great together.
Child's books tend toward the 'hero-saves-the-day' thriller genre (which is not normally my choice of reading material) but are entertaining and quick reads. "Deep Storm" stretches credability a bit, but you won't care as the action pulls you through the pages.
Nice thing about Child and Preston, whether writing individually or together - you never feel cheated when you finish the last page. And that's a high compliment from someone who reads a lot of books.

Book Review: Deep Disappointment
Summary: 2 Stars

Sorry, Mr. Child, you imploded with this effort, almost as badly as the "facility." Too much pressure from your publisher to meet a deadline, perhaps? The plot has a few interesting aspects, such as the notion that aliens visited earth long ago and left something sinister behind (remember the John W. Campbell short novel "Who Goes There?"), but overall this book just falls flat. There is way too much psuedo-scientific astrophysics jargon for my taste (and I have an aeronautical/astronautical engineering degree). Character development is weak at best, and the science versus rigid-military-mind conflict is a very tired cliche. Readers of Utopia know that Child can write much better than this.

Book Review: Good sci-fi thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

This is an exciting and engaging novel about a North sea oil platform serving as a cover for a rather exotic underwater exploration project. It starts out great and keeps the reader's attention throughout, but it seems to end a little too soon. Once the inevitable catastrophe occurs, the story seems to speed right to an abrupt ending. It is still a good adventure/sci-fi story and very timely as far as technology is concerned. The subject of the exploration is surprising and quite inventive. I really think the last few chapters could have been expanded to add more excitement and pursue some very intriguing plot lines. Perhaps though, there is a sequel on the horizon? Highly recommended.

Book Review: A Great Piece of Writing
Summary: 5 Stars

A fast read that you will not want to put down until you finish it. Of course, that is not always possible, but the chapters flow and keep you so well focused you will not lose the impact of the excitement of Child's brilliant novel. Only one complaint, his characters do not pull you in emotionally as well as they should. Asher and Spartan eventually let some of their guard down, but the rest are shallow......especially Dr. Crane who is presented as the quinessential physician trained in everything and Ping who must be a computer guru. Lincoln Child's research into the realities of Navy medicine leave a lot to be desired, i.e. physicians do not deploy on submarines!
