Book Reviews of Delaying the Real World: A Twentysomething's Guide to Seeking Adventure

Book Review: Really insightful!
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually found this book through Fastweb- they had a fellowship that you could apply for from the Delay the Real World author and some sponsors. Though I won't be applying for the fellowship since I still have another year left in college, I decided to check out the book on Amazon, and wow, I'm so glad I did.

The book is broken down into helpful chapters on how to go about searching for that great adventure right out of college. It even gives suggestions on some great places to see and things to do. Of course, many of the stories and advice seem idealized and too perfect to actually come by, but the nice thing about the book is that the author and people including the advice and little tidbits realize this and try to make the reader understand that their aspirations and goals can be achieved, even if some grunt work has to be enforced.

When I came across the entertainment section, I got so excited because many of the ideas just seemed so much fun and things that I would love to do. As an artist, I found this section very insightful. Plenty of websites are included in this book which really help in this internet savvy world. Also a lot of information is included about living overseas and dealing with new cultures- a lot of practical info when it comes to living in a completely new environment away from home. There's even a section about 'living it up' in your hometown so really money doesn't stand in the way of everything mentioned in the book. If anything, save up money working at a dinky part-time job, just so you can experience backpacking through Europe later on in the year.

I can't recommend this book enough. Normally books regarding this sort of subject don't seem to live up to the hype, but then again, I never really looked much at those sorts of books. This I found by accident and I'm glad I did. I have a few friends that are graduating in May, and I plan on getting them copies.

My own plans after graduating college (degree in photography and art history), is to save up money working for a photographer for about a year or so, and then I'm moving to Florence to get a degree in art restoration and conservation. Maybe work in a museum.... maybe learn French and work in the Louvre. Maybe become a photojournalist and travel. Maybe become a freelance artist and do my own thing. Maybe do something completely different! Who knows? Stick to what you like and give it your all, and you'll be amazed how well you'll fare. Or at least that is what I'm told. Give me 10 years and I'll let you know. Haha. Interning at an organic farm/community for a summer sounds up my alley as well... hmmmm. The possibilities....
