Book Reviews of Demon Mistress (Otherworld, Book 6)Book Review: Sometimes I wonder if I read the same book Summary: 1 Stars
I have read two other books in the series, wasn't that thrilled with them but I decided to give it another try. By now you already know the basic plots, as in plural because the author has so many going on I don't know how she can keep them all straight. I lost interest about 1/3 of the way through, so I won't try to sort them out for you but they really don't matter. When I start falling asleep reading an Urban Fantasy starring a supposedly KickAss Vampire Chick, I'm thinking the book isn't for me.
Menolly has inherited an inn and found a mysterious diary which leads them to learn of the mysterious disspearance of a previous occupant of the room. So....despite the fact that they have a 2000 year old squid demon attacking Fae in the local fairy disco, and attacking their sister Delilah psycically on the astral plane and killing her slowly, they sill squeeze in the time to try to solve this mysterious strangers mysterious dissapearance. That is just two of the plot lines. Trust me, there are about five others and none of them are very engaging or exciting, more just props so the author can work out her multi-lover fantasy's.
Galennorn has created her own forumla, I'll give her that. A crisis comes up you don't care about, the women grab which ever of their harem of nongender specific lovers or polyamorous husbands to help them solve the problem, afterwhich they all gather at the house and discuss the near misses and how to solve the problems. One of the three sister's takes charge, tells all the men what they should do,all these supposed alpha males agree to what ever they are told to do, everyone rushes out to it, then they go somewhere solve a little part of one of the mysteries squeezing in the sleuthing between attackes, another unrelated problem arises, they all rush out and kick ass and then go back to the house, sit around the table and drink tea, and then rush out to handle another crisis. Sharing supposedly cute sexual barbs with eachother's pantheon of lovers rushing to and from the crisises is pretty much the sum of the sexual tension.
For women with such diverse love lifes, there isn't a lot of sex going on. Camille has THREE husbands, one of whom is a supposedly insanely jealous dragon who beats up men who make passes at his wife but doesn't seem to have a problem with her being married to two other men at the same time. Menolly has a girlfriend who is supposed to be such an important loving part of her life, who shows up for some five second lesbian nookie in the very beginning of the book and then explains she can't really see Menolly much for awhile due to politics because she is so busy, but how about if they agree to be monogamous as far as not sleeping with other women. Evidently having sex with guys isnt' cheating. The Main Character doesn't seem hurt sad or dissapointed that her lover is basically cutting her out of her life for awhile due to politics despite the fact that when a man friend showed up an hour before and did this exact thing she almost took out his throat. Nerisse the girlfriend moves convienantly aside so in the midst of the latest manufactured crisis Menolly will have room to guilt free start feeling incredibly attracted to one of the demons who has been helping them out. A man who has signed some convenant that forces him (although he is choosing this) to be subjucated by the women. I'm not making this up, the author did. It is bordering on LKH without the arduer, although the sex is about as exciting.
There isn't a lot of time to really build the supposed sexual tension with the demons (and yes there are two) At one point, she and one of her potential new lovers almost have sex on her brother-in-law the dragon's back while he flys them to yet another dangerous situation. While I appreciated the time management skills The MC and her LI displayed, I threw up a little in my mouth.
Galenorn has spread the love interests and the plots so far and wide, you reach the point of not ever emotionally connecting or investing in ANY of the relationships, be they between the three sisters, Camille the plump bossy velvet covered witch with the three husbands, Menolly the bisexual kick ass albino vampire, or Delilah who I can't even figure out what her deal is except she turns into....a kitten. Needless to say, she doesn't seem to be a lot of help, maybe that is why the other two sisters are always having to boss everybody around.
Summary of Demon Mistress (Otherworld, Book 6)Menolly, Camille, and Delilah are the D'Artigo Sisters-half-human, half-Faerie operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. Their latest assignment is to root out the secret society responsible for unleashing chaos magic against the city-and to stop a demon from devouring Delilah's soul.
