Book Reviews of Descent of Angels (Warhammer 40,000 Novels: Horus Heresy) (Pt. 6)

Book Review: Wow....
Summary: 1 Stars

I can't believe that some people rate this book anything over three stars, and a three would only be acceptable if the individual had little or no knowledge of writing structure or character development. Five stars is just ridiculous. Seriously, you couldn't have read the book if you gave it that many stars.
Moving on, this book is abysmal (in case my opinion was in any way obscured in my previous statements), not worth the time it takes to read. I wouldn't even recommend this for people who are fans of the series (like myself). It's so poorly written that it makes the other books worse simply because they are all part of the Horus Heresy. Absolutely nothing happens in this book to advance the overall story, which would be fine if the book had been written with any degree of skill.
The first issue is, like others have mentioned in previous comments, that the characters are bland and do not develop during the story. Each of their actions are predictable, like the fat one carries a heavy bolter once they become Space Marines. WHOAH, what a shocker, the fat guy carries the big gun. I know, a minor part of the story, but stupid nonetheless. Even the main character, Zahariel, whom we follow throughout the story, seems like a child even upon reaching adulthood and becoming an Astartes. I found it difficult to identify with him or really even care what happened to him in the book. He's boring and has little to no personality, which is pretty much standard for all the characters in this story.
The second issue is that the author has no business writing novels. His descriptions of events and objects in the world are extremely painful to read. He will state the same thing about three to four times, slightly reworded, when attempting to help the reader understand a specific part of the environment or a certain character relationship. He will drone on and on about the same boring thing but then blow through pretty important parts of the plot. It's painful to read, I found myself putting the book down and cursing the author for writing the book and the publisher for thinking that this crap was worthy of reaching print.
The third issue is the overall structure of the story. There are a couple of climax-like parts of the story, but nothing really draws the reader in like the other stories. There are a few action-oriented scenes in the book, but they are like the rest of the book, poorly written and poorly described. Nothing in the story ever really draws you in and keeps your interest. Upon completion, I found myself wondering what significant had happened in the story. Once you finish it you really can't tell, everything was just so bland and boring.
Now, I understand these stories aren't necessarily supposed to be literary works of art, but they are supposed to entertain the reader and keep their interest. The other books in the series accomplish this, for the most part. Descent of Angels fails to even keep the reader's attention for more than a couple pages. The author's failure to develop any of the characters, his lack of writing ability, and the extremely poor structure of the story itself all combine to make this a book to be avoided. If you're going to read this just because it's part of the series (like I did), don't. Leaving it out will not effect the storyline, but it will help with retaining your own sanity.
