Book Reviews of Developer's Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0

Book Review: A C++ GUIDING ANGEL
Summary: 5 Stars

Software technology is changing rapidly in each decade. The time I started COM programming is where .NET environment already existed, so what am I going to do ? Try to imagine running a console based program to do some backend processing in a Itanium server today, surely the result is amazing isn't it ?

With knowledge of old and new software technology such as COM and .NET environment, we will know the best solution to use and what to apply and not to. In short, somehow we need to laverage existing legacy code to get something done fast so that we would not lost the market. Just like early 80's, C calls ASM routines for fast performance issues, today's C# calls C++ unmanaged (DLL), sound similar ?

The reason I want to learn COM is to transport my knowledge and existing written C++ classes to work under internet browser environment ( eg. web form ). Java Applet is one of the good example and yet powerful with security that run under browser. However, due to marketing reason, I am not convinced to dive into Java programming because Microsoft will stop support JVM in the year of 2008, check out the URL below:

http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

Do you want to write an application that may be one day, your web program is unstable under Microsoft IE because of certain features that Microsoft IE had changed and everybody is using Windows Vista ?

Entering C#, I was dissappointed with it, because it is not like Java Applet, C# ASP .NET run at backend, the web form is nothing more that a hooked handler, and a well IDE with RAD tools, all this can be done through standard CGI programming already. Check out this URL:

Moreover, C# cannot do real-time environment like Java Applet that run under internet browser. Yes, you may say C# can do it under Windows Form and with a lot of .NET classes or components within. The problem is, Borland C++Builder or Delphi has been long time provides RAD tools ever since 1995. Check out this URL:

http://www.tmssoftware.com/

What is the point of re-learning a new language for doing Windows Form that already existed in the market 10 years ago ?

Is very ignorance to me, how about you? If C# is similar to Java Applet, and Visual Studio 2005 can provide real-time RAD components for working under web form, I believe it is every programmer's dream.

The only choice left is COM/ActiveX programming to do web form with full native Windows API can be port over. Yes of course, COM/ActiveX can write to disk, which sound unsecure if compared to Java Applet, but if I can grab 70% of the customers in the market that accept COM/ActiveX components, not to mention enterprise companies often emphasize much on web security, it is more than enough for me to run the business well.

Thanks to Andrew Troelsen for writing this great book that really makes my dream comes true.

This book is neither just a COM programming book as described from its title nor just a crystal clear C++ programming book but more than that. Once you have read through this book, your mind will be opened up and new concepts will start flow in. With this, you can write code even better then ever before. I must say this is not a book to learn C/C++ for beginner but for those who are already has C/C++ programming experience at least 1-2 years.

However, is worthy to get this book in hand, especially when you are about to move into OOP in C++.

Summary of Developer's Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0

Microsoft s Component Object Model is one of the most important concepts in software development today. Developer s Workshop to COM and ATL 3.0 provides an in-depth treatment of COM and shows how to adopt a component framework, namely ATL, to help lessen the burden of repetitive code. Every chapter contains integrated lab assignments that give you numerous opportunities to build COM clients and servers using raw C++ and IDL, as well as the Active Template Library. The book is divided into five sections, each focusing on a particular aspect of COM and ATL development. The book begins with a review of object-oriented and interface-based programming techniques, then moves into the core aspects of COM, including a full examination of language independence and location transparency. The author illustrates the numerous CASE tools used during ATL development and discusses apartments, COM exceptions, object identity, and component housing, in addition to various advanced concepts such as COM categories and tear-off interfaces. The fourth section examines a number of COM patterns such as enumerators, collections, scriptable objects, and callback interfaces. The book closes with an investigation of using ATL as a windowing framework and wraps up with the development of a full-blown animated ActiveX control using ATL.
