Book Reviews of Devil May Care (The New James Bond Novel )Book Review: Great in spots, just OK overall Summary: 3 Stars
Sebastian Faulks proves a better interpreter of James Bond and the style of his creator Ian Fleming than anything I've read before -- Kingsley Amis's "Colonel Sun" and several (though not all) of the John Gardner books -- but that's not saying that much. Faulks provides a few bullseye highlights that emulate Fleming's style close to perfectly -- a high-stakes tennis match, an increasingly desperate underwater exploration, a shootout on a plane, some successful asides of sly humor -- but Bond lacks his cutthroat testosterone with both the ladies and a couple bad guys that takes the edge off the character, and the tagalong girlfriend becomes incrementally more annoying. The book works in fits and starts, but disappoints overall because in sections it gleams with promise of what it could have been.
Book Review: Faithful to the original NOVELS (not movies)... Summary: 4 Stars
From the first few pages this book was a delight. I grew up reading my dad's copies of Ian Flemings novels, before I saw my first James Bond film (which happened to be the "new" release - Live and Let Die - suffice it to say, early on I saw the difference between a Fleming novel and a Bond film, and Devil May Care was to me like picking up a long lost original novel. Faulks keeps the character in the 60's and very much like the book bond. Unlike later authors who modernize the character (with a dash of the film persona) Faulks stays true to style...and it is a delight if you are a fan of the series. Plus the book ends with quite an enjoyable twist.
If you like the original novels or want to get a taste of them (though you should read a Fleming as well) I recommend this.
Book Review: a view of devil may care(james bond book) Summary: 1 Stars
Faulks is not a Ian Fleming case of writer....he has only taken some of the items Fleming layed down as facts about the bond stories as about five other writers have tryed. this book not a Fleming story. and i hope he will give up trying to make a match....but i feel Raymond Benson gave it the best of trys...but his last two Bond storys,i had the feel he ran out of story line,& tryed to do the same on both books...
So, i didn't care for Faulds title or story.the drawing of Bond on the cover was done well.I think cover sale a book.the story makes the book.and the U.K. was totally wrong.and the new set of Fleming books coming in Aug.or Oct.this year are a complete let down...does some one realy think these think out?...Bond i hope the best for you...
Book Review: Back to the Future Maybe? Summary: 4 Stars
I admit, (although I am not proud of it), that I have not read any of the original Ian Fleming Bond books. Ya, I've seen all the movies from Connery to Craig, and every one in between. My sense is that Faulks' 007 is probably a lot closer to the original Fleming than say, Moonraker-the- movie. While this was not the most exciting spy thriller I've ever read, I did try to take in time and place, and put it in the context of the originals, which Faulks did thankfully read and study. It's a good book; but if like me, you bring a lot of Bond (movie) baggage, be prepared to work through your issues. It's hard to duplicate all those cinamatic chase scenes in a book, and this 007 dosen't always get (or want) the girl. Go figure.
Book Review: Bond is back in style! Summary: 4 Stars
Like the much needed "relaunch" of James Bond films, Devil May Care brings the spy back to his roots. While I enjoyed the first few Raymond Benson novels, it was clear by the end that the author's interest was elsehwere. His final original novel, The Man With the Red Tatoo, was so poorly written that I didn't even finish it. So it was with some hesitation that I picked up Devil May Care. But I'm happy to say that this is a Bond story the way it should be--dramatic without being over the top and very tightly paced. There is never a dull moment, and even the author's injections of culture and history are welcome as a respite from the great action. I truly hope we see more 007 stories from Sebastian Faulks.
