Book Review: Coming to terms with the past...
Summary: 5 Stars
I have to say that I'm getting pleasantly surprised by this series. I had originally expected it to be just another murder mystery series with a supernatural gimmick, but occasionally during the book it had touches of urban fantasy. This book has to be one of the better ones I've read in this genre recently, for more than one reason. (I'll explain why later in the review.)
This book picks up about a year after the events in the previous book. Business has been booming for Sadie, especially since one of her fellow crime scene cleaners had to go away, leaving Sadie to handle his business while he is gone. If that's not enough to frazzle a girl's nerves, she's also got to deal with her new employee constantly flirting with Zack & the discovery of the leftovers of a gruesome satanic ritual at what should have been a regular meth lab clean. Unfortunately Sophie's stepped into the middle of a situation that has not only put herself in danger, but also her family as she's chased down by motorcycle riding gang members with a score to settle.
I have to say, I enjoyed this book. It was a little shorter than I'd expected, for how much is actually dealt with in the book. A lot of plot elements introduced in the first book are completed in this book, which I really like. There were a few things introduced in this book, such as the evil forces at the meth lab that could make for intriguing new plot lines in future books.
I liked that the book jumped forwards in time, although I have to admit that I felt like I'd missed something during some parts of the book. (SPOILER) We're told that Sadie & Zack hooked up shortly after the events in the first book, but we didn't get any of that in the previous book & I sort of felt like I must have missed a short story or a book in the series. I was a little disappointed that it was just a "hey, this happened while the audience's back was turned" type of thing. It didn't ruin the book by any means, but it sort of interrupted the flow of the book for me when I first read it.
I can definitely recommend this to fans of the first book & I can also safely say that this will be something that I'll re-read in the future. The idea of the series is fun & I like that Roberts is actually trying to move the plot along rather than take certain plot elements at a snail's pace.
