Book Review: I'm not sure why you would want this

After having read the whole book, I must admit that it would be difficult for me to explain who would really want to read it. Not that it is a bad book. It covers some of the subjects you would get in a standard beginning Diff Eq class in college, but (as the title implies) just cannot do an adequate job given the size that it is. There is a reason that standard texts are as large as they are. And it has more typos than I would like, but again not so many as to be enough to stop reading it.
The real problem is with the subject matter itself. Writing a book for Diff Eq is not like writing "Golf for Dummies" or "Ebay for Dummies". Many topics that you don't know much about can be introduced in a light-hearted way with clear explanations and after a couple hundred pages and a few hours you can put the info to good use. This topic just isn't like that, in my opinion. You just can't get a lot out of a Diff Eq course without a fairly solid understanding of algebra and calculus techniques, which takes a while to learn under the best of circumstances. The same problem would occur with "Molecular Vibrations for Dummies", for example.
Which brings me back to the question of who could use this book. If you don't have the algebra/calculus prerequisite knowledge, then this book will not really convey much that you will readily comprehend. And if you do have the prerequisites, then you would be better off getting a good standard Diff Eq text, of which there are several, because you are not, by definition, a dummy and would get a much more comprehensive exposure to and understanding of the topic in that way.
So, three stars. Mainly because I just can't see where this book fits in with any specific target audience that I can think of.
