Book Reviews of Dilbert 2.0: 20 Years of Dilbert

Book Review: Read, enjoy, and compost!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are a Dilbert fan, then you need to get a copy of this collection of Dilbert cartoons, all interspersed with comments from cartoonist Scott Adams regarding issues of inspiration, editing, trial and error, and character development. This isn't a complete collection, however, because I could recognize that cartoons were missing in some sequences. There is a CD attached to the book that may have these missing cartoons, but I bought this book for being a book, not a CD. However, you favorite characters are all here: Dilbert, Wally, Poor Alice, Asok, he-who-should-not-be-named (aka the Pointy-Haired Boss), Dogbert, Ratbert, Catbert, and more. Now this is a BIG and HEAVY (9 pounds!) book. Don't plan on carrying it around!

I made it to page 38 before laughing out loud.

Here are a few of my favorites:

[Dilbert walking down a hallway at work, thinking]: "Oh, no... if this guy turns left when I go right, we'll end up walking down the hall right next to each other." [it happens]
Dilbert: "I hate this... a huge, empty hallway and here we are synchronized like two of the Rockettes."
[Later, talking to Dogbert at home] Dilbert: "... so that's when I knocked on the ladies' room door, yelled 'janitor' and ducked inside."
Dogbert: "At least you maintained your dignity" (p. 38).

[Pointy-haired boss talking to yellow shirt guy] Yellow shirt guy: "You should have seen that fish..."
Pointy-haired boss: "That's nothing, compared to the fish I..." [Pointing-haired boss spreading arms wide to represent size of fish, just as Dilbert walks in]
Pointy-haired boss: [still holding arms outstretched] "Hi, Dilbert."
Dilbert [thinking]: "He wants to hug me. That's strange. Okay, I'm a nineties guy."
Dilbert [hugging boss]: "Hi, boss."
Dilbert [thinking]: "Now I have to hug this [yellow shirt] guy so it doesn't seem awkward."
Dilbert [hugging yellow shirt guy who is trying to escape]: "Hi, it's a pleasure to meet you."
Dilbert [thinking, as he walks away from two frazzled guys]: "I'm glad we've outgrown the uptight eighties" (p. 123).

[Dilbert at the beginning of a presentation he is giving in the conference room]
Ted: "I hope you won't mind my pillow and blanket at your presentation. The last time you presented, I lost consciousness and broke my nose on the table."
Dilbert [looking around at a room full of snoring coworkers]: "Whatever happened to good manners" (p. 126).

Dilbert: "Hey Wally, how did you get a roof for your cubicle?"
Wally: "This stuff is all modular. You just take some idiot's wall and make it your ceiling."
Dilbert: "By any chance, do you know what happened to MY wall?"
Wally: "What did it look like?" (p. 166).

Pointy-haired boss in conference room: "One of these donuts contains a memo which fires the recipient. This seemed like the most humane way to reduce head count."
Dilbert [leaving the meeting later with Wally]: "How was your donut?"
Wally: "The first two were great. The third was papery" (p. 223).

One more sample...

[Dilbert, Alice, and Wally in the break room, eating lunch]
Wally: "I don't understand why people wash their bath towels. When I get out of the shower I'm the cleanest object in my house. In theory, those towels should be getting cleaner every time they touch me."
Alice: "Maybe I could hug you every day so I don't need to take showers."
Wally: "Are towels supposed to bend" (p. 246).

I've got four Dilbert cartoons taped to my office door. I don't think the right coworker has ever stopped by to read them!

One last thing. I don't believe most people have a sense about the unwieldiness of a 9 pound book. It's is heavy, and tiresome to hold up. You'll want to read this one as it sits flat on a table or on your lap!

Summary of Dilbert 2.0: 20 Years of Dilbert

Book Description
Scott Adams "is a VERY tough act to follow." --Suzanne Tobin, Washington Post

In the tradition of The Complete Far Side and The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, Dilbert 2.0 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Scott Adams's Dilbert, the touchstone of office humor.

This special slipcased collection--weighing in at more than ten pounds with 600 pages and featuring almost 4,000 strips--takes readers behind the scenes and into the early days of Scott Adams's life pre-Dilbert and on to the success that followed when Dilbert became an internationally syndicated sensation.

Divided into five different epochs, Dilbert 2.0 gives readers a glance at some of Adams's earliest strips, like those created for Playboy, and a peek at an abundance of special content ranging from numerous rejection letters to Adams's first cartooning check, and more.

Adams personally selected the material for this collection and offers original comments and humorous asides throughout. Also included is a disc that contains every Dilbert comic strip to April 2008.
