Book Reviews of Dilbert 2.0: 20 Years of DilbertBook Review: Good but not truly great - yet Summary: 4 Stars
With a legacy collection like this, the format is being reviewed as much as, or more, than the content. If you don't already know and like Dilbert, then it is unlikely that this an appropriate starting point.
There is an interesting introduction by Scott Adams, together with some early strips that never saw the ink of newsprint. Then a "best-of" collection follows, broken down by era, together with some notes on particular strips.
Unlike the Complete Calvin and Far Side, this is not a complete works. How could it be, when Adams is still writing Dilbert? But in a sense it is, as there is a CD with the complete Dilbert on it, and a note that for strips after publication, go to dilbert.com. So it's a wonderful huge hardbound collection, in one volume, whereas Far Side is two volumes and Calvin is three. Mind you, this is cheaper than those sets. Its still to big to take on the train though.
At the end of the day, this is everything it says it is...but still, it is not quite as enthralling as the Far Side and Calvin collections - which makes it only the third-best comic-strip compendium out there. Perhaps that judgment is because to a degree I read Far Side and Calvin in the last days of my boyhood, while Dilbert was and remains purely an adult pleasure, free of nostalgia.
This is well worth getting, but be aware what it is not.
Book Review: The Best of Dilbert Summary: 5 Stars
Dilbert 2.0 is a wonderful selection of Dilbert comics with annotations by the author, Scott Adams. I enjoyed both his selections and his comments. The introduction to the book is well written and interesting - I particularly liked the "pre-history" Dilbert cartoons.
Best of all, the back of the book has a CD with a collection of all the Dilbert cartoons! I had no idea that I couldn't live without a Dilbert CD, but now that I've tried it, I can't!
I should mention that the book, in a classy slip case, weighs about 9 pounds and is, therefore, a poor candidate for reading in bed - unless your bed happens to have a desk attachment suitable for holding large, heavy books. Although I was, for my own political reasons, sorry to see that the book was printed in China, I must say that the production values are very high and that the packaging is very attractive.
All in all, a book you'll be happy to have on your coffee table with a CD that you'll be happy to keep by your PC.
Book Review: Very cool history of Scott and Dilbert Summary: 4 Stars
I very much enjoyed the detailed history of Scott (all the way back to school age!) and his drawings and how his skills became refined while he worked in other jobs. I also liked the disk with all of the Dilberts you can think of, but I was under the impression that it would also have several videos (like from the short-lived TV show, or some of the shorts you sometimes see on Scott's Dilbert website) so I was a little disappointed. If those videos are there, I didn't find them, so someone please tell me where to look if you saw them on the disk.
The only other downside is that the book is rather large (presumably, in order to give the best quality experience) and so it is a little cumbersome. It also weighs something like 7 or 8 pounds--much more than most laptops! That's what makes the disk nice. Although it doesn't have all the other info that's in the book, it does have the whole history of published Dilberts. Very cool.
Book Review: Dilbert 2.0: 20 Years of Dilbert or the hardcover Dilbert collection Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted and got this Dilbert 2.0 hardback book for Christmas. I wanted it because I wanted to read EVERYTHING Scott Adams has ever written on Dilbert. Now EVERY Dilbert cartoon isn't printed in this huge book, but the included DVD has them all and lets you log onto the Dilbert website to download all newer ones made after this DVD was printed. The author tells the story behind his getting Dilbert printed. He also comments on various key strips telling why and how he wrote what he did. This is my favorite feature. The book is 10 pounds, 20 years, and almost 600 pages! And it comes in it's own hardcover case. The book is well made and high quality! My only complaint is that it's so heavy, it hurts your legs if you sit and read very long. This is a wonderful thing to own. I already have the CALVIN & HOBBES big box set and like it. I think I'll get THE FAR SIDE big box set nex. [...]
Book Review: A must for any Dilbert Fan Summary: 5 Stars
It's big and heavy and contains around 4000 of Scott Adam's Dilbert strips with commentary, which is always insightful and interesting. The size makes it hard to read unless you've put it on a desk. I've got mine on my computer desk and I just read a strip while I'm waiting for something to load.
The best part, though, is the DVD that comes with every strip from the last 20 years in year order.
You might be confused when you first look at it, as it seems so little, but they are all there. They are in year order starting with 89 and each folder is similary labelled.
I love this because I can take Dilbert with my anywhere and view it on any PC.
Definately worth getting if you have the money.
