Book Reviews of Divine Justice (Camel Club)

Book Review: Spy novel in the middle of nowhere, Virginia.
Summary: 5 Stars

The book "Divine Justice" by David Baldacci - a pretty good and fun read. It's my first Baldacci book, and I've read completely out of order, missing subplots from previous books that make their way into this one. Nonetheless, it reads well. It is an interesting amalgam of a spy novel, with a local drug ring mystery, and is unique in my reading of spy thriller novels. For that, I give it a good rating. I definitely did not expect the story to take the turns Baldacci traversed. Rather than being an international setting, typical of spy reads, this one is firmly placed in Appalachian Virginia, in the middle of nowhere - namely in the town of Divine. The inhabitants of that town are pretty much all up to no good, with a select few exceptions. If you are looking for a fictional spy novel with something "different" to it - this is a good book to select; practically guaranteed to satisfy.

Book Review: great characters, plot slightly flawed
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the first David Baldacci book I've read, and I will be reading more. I love the characters and how they talk to each nother. The conversations are fluid and natural. Baldacci doesn't stretch out scenes; he gets to the point very quickly. I like how the two main characters, whom you anticipate are heading to a climactic showdown, end up teaming up in the end.

The flaw in the book is how the plot elements come together. The protagonist, Stone, intervenes in identical situations SEVERAL TIMES to save people's lives. By the third time Stone saves someone along this lonely mountain road you think to yourself whether Baldacci had accidentally written the same scene over and over again. Also, the sheriff of the town is a complete nincompoop. A visitor to the town figured out in a week what he couldn't in years.

Book Review: OUTSTANDING
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read most of Baldacci's novels and all of the Camel Club series. This one goes down as the best of the series and perhaps one of his finest books. Beyond his writing style and the twists and turns, he has put together one of the better series in the mystery/thriller genre. His characters are deep, the plots are great, and the Camel Club has undergone various changes, losses and additions. As much as this is escapism at its finest, there is a "real" feel to the series and this novel specifically. I rarely say "you must start at the beginning," but with the Camel Club, you must. Start there and read these in order - you will NOT be disappointed!

Book Review: Smooth writing -- a page turner
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first book of David Baldacci's I have ever read, and I am hooked.

Baldacci combined narrative, dialog, description and back-story in a fluid and smooth story. He held tight to the plot and developed well-rounded characters who I quickly felt an attachment to.

Baldacci is a master of the writing craft, he knows how to use economy of words without the normal fluff and word-fill that is found in most novels. He did a great job of sucking me into his story line.

Great Job. I will be buying more of his novels... that is for sure.

Book Review: Little too far fetched...
Summary: 3 Stars

I like the Camel Club books. I have read them all. I like Baldacci. This was more like a Patterson novel (who is pathetic as a writer). In this book, two people die in the same small little town and nobody thinks to connect them? Then, two more. Then rattlesnakes in the cave-this was really off the charts ridiculous. McGyver-ish stunts. Another federal agent grows a conscience? The ending scene is just...I am at a loss of words on how ludicrous. Just a few too many forced twists and turns and a little over the top. I know it's fiction but this book goes way overboard.
