Book Reviews of Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, Book 2)Book Review: A Good Second Chapter of the Outlander Series Summary: 4 Stars
"Dragonfly in Amber" is good second chapter of the "Outlander" series. If you enjoyed "Outlander" you are sure to enjoy the continuation of Jamie and Claire's story. All of the characters from the first novel are back, with more romance and political intrigue than ever.
At nearly a thousand pages, this book is longer than "Outlander", but generally the pacing is good and the action comes fast, so you keep reading. I did feel like the third quarter of the book dragged a little bit, but all in all I really enjoyed the read.
I would not recommend that a reader new to the "Outlander" series start with this book, since there is very little flashback to the first book, and you really need the background of the first book to understand what is going on in "Dragonfly."
Book Review: Broken cardinal rule: never have a flashback in a flashback Summary: 3 Stars
I wasn't as taken with Outlander as other readers were. I thought I'd try one more in the series and read this book. I didn't like that the story picked up in a completely different place than where it left off in the first book, and that, while I was expecting a flashback, I also expected it to be less abrupt than simply a change in chapters. You were there, now you're here. Ms. Gabaldon also broke my own personal cardinal rule of writing, which is to never have a flashback within a flashback (again, usually without warning).
If you're the kind of reader who doesn't get bored with politics, it's probably a fine book for you. If you're like me and you prefer the human interest focus, rather than the political, I'd steer clear.
Book Review: Read on Summary: 5 Stars
After browsing the reviews, I decide I had to rise up and defend an all-time favorite of mine. To the initiated, Diana Gabaldon suffers not from a well-trained editor.
This book is an absolutely entrancing read, and remarkable in it's historical accuracy. The very wordiness some complain of, others celebrate. The very lengthiness some bemoan, others indulge.
This book holds parts of life. Some, we have all experienced. Others are entrancing in their exotic nature. I found it fascinating and was unable to put it down, I've also re-read this book several times and it was just as engrossing in later reads.
Once again, take the plunge. You will not regret it, and will only be longing for the next book.
Book Review: unsure Summary: 2 Stars
At a used bookstore, the owner and a lady were talking about this book. The owner told me to just read the 2nd one, because the book repeats so much. A 100 pages in, I knew I was missing a lot. I went to Books A Million and realized the store owner sold me the 3rd book in the series. So i bought Outlander and this 1nd book. Outlander was pretty good, I have read far better books. Now I am dragging through on this one, skipping pages. I know what happens from starting the 3rd book. The Randall raping of Jamie, is just plain disgusting and not what I expect in historical fiction/love story/novel, whatever this book is classified in. I will continue to skip pages and just finish this book, eventually.
Book Review: There must be something wrong with me because I thought it was boring Summary: 2 Stars
I don't get why this book is so popular. I liked OUTLANDER. Very readable. Fun. Unique love story, but this one is a real struggle.
I gave up on it 640 pages in after 3 months of TRYING, trying TRYING to get through this book.
It's slow to start. The first time I tried to read DRAGONFLY I only got about 40 pages in before giving up. You think Brianna is going to be a larger part of the story but she's not. The part in France is pretty good, but it takes about 200 pages to get there, and the fun abruptly ends and they head back to Scotland. Scotland is where it gets boring again.
Also, the back suggests that there is a lot of hot sexy action, but there is none.
