Book Reviews of Draw Manga: How to Draw Manga In Your Own Unique Style

Book Review: You wan't the truth!?.
Summary: 4 Stars

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!! (commence rolling eyes)

But seriously, this is a great book.
Thought lets be clear, this book will not teach you how to draw manga (or how to draw".") to say this book glosses over the fundamentals would be an understatement. It does not contain the basics on anatomy, nor a step by step on perspective, it will not give you tips on writing a script and it does not contain a tutorial on sequential art, it does give you some basic tips on inking and on self publishing along with a basic history of manga(among "other" things).

"Well then what's the point of this book its title and its crummy cover?"
I'll tell you...
The title is simply there as a statement, but in my opinion a better title (or truer) would be "THE REASON BEHIND YOUR INABILITY TO DRAW MANGA AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT"... not quite as PC huh? how many people do you thing would buy it?

The purpose of the book is simply to tell you the truth...you know that truth you have always known in the back of your mind, the one you always told yourself was NOT true, the one you really wished wasn't or that you could some how sidestep it entirely, the one you "convinced" yourself was NOT true. It takes a real man or woman to admit it.
That is, that YOU...DO...NOT...KNOW...HOW...TO...DRAW...devastating i know.
I somehow fooled my self into believing for 10 years that i could.
(obviously this statement does not apply to those who DO know how to draw).

"What are the clues that i do not know how to draw?"
Well if you can't pick a scene to draw from real life, be it nature, urban, industrial,etc...and draw it from any and all perspectives including objects and figures in "proper" perspective...chances are you do not know how to draw.
If you can't put together a single page of sequential art, 5 panels of a person in the middle of a true room (as in not a simple cube) sitting on a chair tying his shoe from 5 different perspectives...more than likely, you do not know how to draw.

You see unfortunately drawing is more than being able to replicate the same thing over and over in a static fashion, or drawing puppies only, or portraits really well but nothing else.
This book will tell you the reasons WHY you can't (much more complex than you may think) and "inform"(not teach) you how to go about learning how to draw. Simple, thought i do wish it would simply do teach you.

The crummy cover? (of which apparently there are 2 versions) Well IMHO this is simply to be taken as inspiration. You see drawing is a learned skill, only a few are born with "some" natural ability. so ANYONE can learn to draw, if they devote and truly apply themselves. If the author, who has learned a decent thought not amazing level of skill, enough to be well accomplished, published and knowledgeable in the field. Then that should give anyone hope for themselves to be as good or even surpass his skill.

Its about good sound information not teaching you to mimic his or other's skill.
Only one thing in this world can teach you to draw...And that is to draw!! often, anything and everything,be your own "honest" critic not your "worst".
Only one thing in this world can make you a "BETTER" artist...And that is to draw!! often, everything you drew and anything you might have not yet drawn or thought of drawing.

EDIT* it amazes me how many people dislike this review, even thought it actually praises the book...lol I guess most people don't like being told they can't draw? lol

Summary of Draw Manga: How to Draw Manga In Your Own Unique Style

Bruce Lewis, one of the first professional cartoonists to bring the manga-style to the United States, takes an entirely fresh approach to the subject that's perfect for beginners.

Manga is all the rage, the hippest and most popular form of comic book drawing today. That's why so many aspiring illustrators long to master the style. But too many of the available how-to manuals don't offer the appropriate help for the westerner-or understand which products are available to artists here. Bruce Lewis, an American who's stepped in manga culture, offers something different: an excitingly visual from-the-ground-up explanation of manga and its roots, the conventions of manga illustrations, and advice on developing an individual style. His handbook builds skills, from drawing the basic figure to creating believable characters, from setting the scene to developing the story. There's even information on creating dramatic lettering. By the time artists have worked their way through this essential guide, they'll feel confident drawing their own manga works and know how to get them published too.
