Book Reviews of Dress Your Best: The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That's Right for Your Body

Book Review: I prefer Trinny and Susannah
Summary: 3 Stars

I think this book is helpful, but I found Trinny and Susannah's What Not to Wear far more so and much more interesting. Maybe it depends on your figure problems. I couldn't really find myself in Dress Your Best. The one I'd be closest to was somewhat helpful, but many of their recommendations would have exaggerated other figure flaws. There are way too many 4-inch heels in here to be practical - great for photos, not for walking more than a block or two. I only found 3 pairs of womens shoes in this book that looked like they could be considered "flat" (two were kitten heels).

They don't address things like flabby arms, short legs, or thick ankles. They just put you in a structured jacket, pointy shoes, an A-line skirt or straight-legged (usually) pants and call it good. Or a sleeveless dress, because that always looks good from the front. I have watched their show for many seasons, and have often thought that they try to find women (in this book and on the show) who either have a proportionally narrow waistline or proportionally narrow ankles and then emphasize it. Stacey and Clinton may recognize figure flaws, but they have no idea what it's like to actually have one or two.

This is one reason why I like Trinny and Susannah - they talk the talk AND walk the walk; half the fun is seeing what they are wearing and whether it works. All you can learn from looking at Stacey is that if something looks bad on her (extremely rare), it won't look good on anyone. Trinny and Susannah started What Not to Wear in Britain and it was a great show for a few years until they changed their format and seemed to start taking themselves too seriously. During it's best years, I found it superior to the American What Not to Wear, because they came up with much more interesting and feminine clothing - more boots, beautiful skirts and sweaters, and less of a uniform. And they were funny and down-to-earth. Their show was half an hour with only relevant information (I fast-forward through their new hour-long shows and the hour-long American version with Clinton and Stacey.)

What I do like about this book is its simplicity. They keep things straight-forward and short. They show the different women in casual clothing and work clothing, not just designer dresses. I don't think it's a problem that they didn't discuss hair or makeup - there is a similarly simple book by Carmindy on makeup and I believe Nick has a book out on hair. This book is called "Dress Your Best" implying the topic is how to dress.
