To the Author:
I just finished reading the book you wrote "DRYWALL", 3rd edition. I'm definatelly a beginner with some skill, not afraid to try something new; especially as a new home owner of a "fixer-upper". Your tips certainly have made me understand as to why I was not getting the results that I wanted, being a prefectionist and all. Let's just say that more careful planning and patience should improve my results dramatically.
If you happen to write another revised edition in the future, it would be great if you would implement some examples on how to match drywall to old, rough plaster walls, such as repairing old plaster walls with drywall, (assuming you want to save them), transitioning the two, old and new world materials together and skimcoating so that there is a complete wall again. I found this to be a bit challenging because the thickness of the old plaster and lath wall wasn't always uniform; therefore, the drywall and plaster joints thicknesses could not line up correctly in most cases. Both shimming and shaving had to be done to achieve a good result. Where I live in Northern New England, there are a lot of homes built around 1900 with such walls that are mostly in great condition and are worth saving, but may need some repairing by the floor area or around doors and windows. I found drywalling such repairs to be more cost effective than calling in a Plaster. I haven't been able to find any literature on taping both types of wall together so I don't really know what the long term of the seems will be like - just have to we wait and see.
Thank you for writing such a great book; it's a must for any homeowner's library.
P.S. The spacing of fasteners along a studd was unclear to me; perhaps it's the same distance as the o.c. from studd to studd?
