Book Review: The best in this series

A friend gave me the first 3 books in this knitting mystery series by Maggie Sefton. The first book was slow but I liked the characters and the setting so I went on to Book 2. It was a little better so I went on to Book 3. I decided to buy the next 2 books myself. Yes, the writting is simplistic, the dialogue is at times sophmoric. BUT when I read a cozy mystery, which this series definitely is, I'm not looking for great literature. I'm looking for likable characters, a pleasant setting and a murder that isn't gor-rific. I like folliwng a series because I like getting acquainted with the large cast and following their development from book to book.
I think the reviewer who takes Ms. Sefton to task for not offering a more realistic idea on how to dye yarn is being unfair. If I wanted to learn how to dye yarn, I'd buy an instruction manual. And in Maggie's defense, she stresses the importance of wearing gloves during the process and the characters keep their gloves on throughout this scene. The same is true for Kelly's concern for her dog after he's poisoned; she stayed at the animal hospital overnight, she keeps Carl with her at all times after he returns home, even training him to stay with her at the yarn shop. What more do you want?
As for why I specifically liked this book more than the others in the series; the author didn't reveal the murderer too early as she has done in the previous books. In fact, I wasn't sure who the murderer was until about 2 chapters before the book ended. And it made sense to me why the killer was targeting his next potential victim. I think the author HAS grown in her story-telling abilities. I haven't read the latest 2 issues in this series but I will because I like the "friends are family" theme that this author has created. If you don't, then maybe you shouldn't continue with this series. And don't buy a cozy mystery and expect to get Hemmingway.
Summary of Dyer Consequences (A Knitting Mystery, No 5)
Kelly's spring project: rehabbing an alpaca ranch. But someone has different ideas for keeping her busy, including slashing tires and cracking windshields. Then the House of Lambspun knitting shop is trashed, and a woman is found drowned in a tub of dye. Although it seems like a burglary gone wrong, Kelly suspects there's more to it. And as disturbing incidents pile up, she must pick up the stitches of these crimes before the killer strikes again.
