Book Reviews of Earthly Bodies & Heavenly Hair: Natural and Healthy Bodycare for Every BodyBook Review: ok for just starting Summary: 3 Stars
this book was good in the sense that i knew nothing of making my own body products when i bought this and it got me really interested in the subject and prompted me to do my own research. her queen of hungary toner is great, but not good for sensitive skin like mine, my face would turn bright red. instead of witch hazel extract i use rose water and instead of lavender essential oil i use rose, which is much much better for sensitive skin. i found this out by reading one of rosemary gladstar's books. also, she gives the basic formulas for making your own creams, salves, ect which is great. if you are looking for just recipes this book is ok.
but here is my beef with this book:
1. no mention of many different types of carrier oils like argan, kukui, cranberry seed, camellia, rosehip seed, medowfoam, red raspberry, black raspbery, blackberry, pomegranate, ect... she mentions only the very basics like olive oil, apricot seed, avocado, jojoba ect she also doesn't explain the carrier oils in depth.
2. no real explaination of essential oils and what each one is good for.
3. all her face washes are oils and essential oils, then says they are not usually good for ancne prone skin (like mine). she gives 1 recipe for a cleansing cream, but it has borax in it. borax has a hazard score of 6-7 (moderate) on the online cosmetic database. ok, it's only moderate, but i don't want to put that on my face...do you?
4. no mention of hydrosols.
5. her section on hair care is not impressive.
6. she gives recipes for body masks which is fine for once in a while, but i would like an everyday cleanser that doesn't involve soap....none in the book.
7. in general it seems outdated.
8. i made her witch hazel and tea tree deoderant...it smelled DISGUSTING. you'd be better off not wearing any deoderant. seriously.
9. no mention of how much grape seed extract to use to help preserve your creams or how much vitamin a, c, or e you should add.
10. it's unclear if she is using fluid oz or weight oz
11. no health cautions about the essential oils. just one example, she uses thuja essential oil in some recipes, which other essential oil books i've read say not to use on the skin.
so overall, it was an ok start to learning about making my own products, but i've quickly grown past this book, and have no interest in making any of the recipes anymore besides the modified queen of hungary toner. i feel like a lot of the information in the book you could easily find online. my plan is to find a good indepth book on essential oils, a book on hydrosols, a book on natural hair care, and maybe one that explains better on how to make face and body washes that don't use soap or perishable ingredients (like fruits, which is fine, but i don't want to make face and body wash each time i shower, i don't have that kind of time). my advice: take the book out from the library and try it out before you purchase it, that's what i wish i had done.
