Book Reviews of Eating For LifeBook Review: Awesome Food, Great Variety Summary: 5 Stars
I am a 39 yr. old male. I started the BFL program only about ten pounds over my ideal weight range. I knew the hardest part of the program would be the limitations on food.
This book is so wonderful. There is a large variety. I had no idea there were so many ways to make chicken, pasta, and seafood taste so wonderful. I have never spent much time in the kitchen, but with this book, cooking is my new hobby.
There are quick and simple meals, like cottage cheese and an apple, and more complicated ones like the turkey meatloaf and pumpkin cheesecake. There are not too many chocolate recipes, but let's be honest, this is a healthy cookbook. There are some chocolate meals, like blender smoothies, and a healthy brownie.
I have tried probably at least 20 of the 150 or so meals and each one has been very, very good. I have branched out with new spices in my kitchen and again, it now has become a hobby for me, as well as a good education.
A few of my favorites are:
- shrimp scampi
- taco pasta salad
- orange roughy
- chicken enchiladas
- turkey meatloaf
- orange blender smoothie
- pumpkin cheesecake
- chicken quesadillas
- sloppy joes
and many more. I look forwar
Book Review: Sticking to it??? Summary: 5 Stars
"Eating for lifestyle" starts with the belief that food is friend, not foe. This is the appropriate attitude towards food. As the book explains, food is necessary - it nourishes the body and mind, satisfies the appetite, calms cravings, renews health and lifts energy. The book also points out that there are no quick fixes, no metabolic tricks or miracles. The book provides straightforward, clear, concise, practical and appropriate principles for eating right. This book is a wealth of great information. What I would like to see more of in this book is practical advice on sticking to these principles of healthy eating. My fitness trainer gave me a book entitled "The Power of Habit." It provides an easy-to-implement, step-by-step process for making healthy eating a permanent, automatic habit. It teaches you how to take these principles for healthy eating and make them part of your lifestyle. "Eating for lifestyle" provides "what to do" and "why", "The Power of Habit" gives you a way to "stick to it". I agree with one of the previous reviews: "Philips' plan requires discipline and hard work." Any good, healthy diet does. What the book could use more of is advice on how to stick to it.
Book Review: Buy it! You won't be sorry! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this book along with the Body for Life book 8 weeks ago. This book makes the transition to this new program so easy! The recipes are great and what I love is that each recipe is for the whole meal: not just an entree that you have to select side dishes to go along with. It completely removes all guess work! The only thing to realize is that women do need to adjust the amounts, as these recipes seem to be geared for men's portions.
Buy the BFL book and this one. That's all you need to get started. I am a 51 year old grandmother who has never "pumped iron" in her life, but I am a convert now! I'm in my 8th week of my first 12 week challenge and have already lost 23 pounds. Normally (in the zillion other diets I've tried), I would have been bored out of my mind by now. But this is fun and exciting because the results are almost immediate. One thing that WAS immediate was my surge in energy. It was amazing how quickly that occurred.
I highly recommend this book and the original Body for Life book. Do yourself a big favor and do this. I can't believe it took me so long to even learn about this, but I'm so glad I did. I will follow this plan from now on. I feel so great, I don't want to stop!
Book Review: Good and bad with this book Summary: 3 Stars
Rating System: 1 star = abysmal; some books deserve to be forgotten 2 star = poor; a total waste of time 3 star = good; worth the effort 4 star = very good; what writing should be 5 star = fantastic; must own it and share it with othersMY FEEDBACK: 1) If you can't eat dairy then this cookbook isn't for you. 90% or greater of the recipes require skim milk, cottage cheese or some other dairy product as a primary ingredient...especially the desserts. 2) The preperation time for many of the meals is 45min+. Not many quick meals here. 3) In general, nice pictures of the meals. Some aren't very flattering to the dish and thus doesn't make me want to make it 4) Interspersed are pictures of the ingredients used...I thought this was very helpful especially for some "unfamiliar" ingredients (i.e. special soy products, etc) 5) Recipes are nicley written out and easy to follow OVERALL: It is a good book that I found sparked ideas that could be prepared quicker and just as loaded with protein, carbs and low fat. If you don't want any quess work and you can have dairy as a main staple of your diet and you have the time to prepare the meals...then this book is for you.
Book Review: Eating for Life Summary: 5 Stars
I have been reading the reviews and a lot of people are putting book down because it does not have the nutritional values. I have been low carbing for 2 years now but no longer can lose the weight. I workout regularly and have been told over and over again by my trainer that I should be eating more carbs. I do miss the bread and pasta. What is great about this book is you can pick and choose between lunches, breakfast and dinner and the mid meals and your entire meal or snack ideas is on one page which makes meal planning that much easier. If you take a good look at your days meals and count the portions of fruit, protein etc you are eating a very balanced diet. What I like about the receipes is that the ingredients (eg. some of the fruits and pasta in the receipes are normal to small portion size so you will not overloading on one food group in any one meal and the ingredients in the receipe seems to balance out to what you should be eating by the end of the day. Maybe it is not so bad not having the nutritional information at hand. I must admit that I had plenty of energy exercising when I was low carbing but maybe I will have more if I add more carbs back into my diet.
