Book Reviews of Eclipse (The Twilight Saga, Book 3)Book Review: Somewhat disappointing...... Summary: 3 Stars
Well where do I start? I'll go back to the beginning. I actually saw the movie Twilight first when it came out on DVD. I was surprised after reading reviews on IMDB that many people who loved the book hated the movie. To me I thought they were pretty close. I didn't perceive the movie to be unlike the book. Since I liked the movie I decided to read the books. Well three of them anyway. I had some mixed feelings about what was going on with the story line in Twilight, but it was a real page turner, that I read in 2 days. I was very eager to see what happened next so off I went onto the second book of the series, New Moon. I also read that in 2 days. My feelings about New Moon were the same as the Twilight book. To me these two books were equal. I was not upset like some other reviewers that Edward was gone for a good portion of book 2. I liked the developing relationship between Bella and Jacob. Their relationship actually made more sense to me then her relationship with Edward. Even though I do believe Edward and Bella's intense and obsessive relationship was something most females would understand especially if they have ever experienced a love obsession in their own lives. But the whole Jacob and his friends/clan turning into a werewolf thing, I could NOT get behind. When I got into that turning point of the story I said "really?" Does this saga really need to go there? I was not comfortable with that shift. It made the story seem more unreal to me then what it already was. I felt the story was becoming too far reaching and ridiculous. I felt like the author didn't know where to take the story and just threw it in. It did not seem like good story development at all. I also feel that SM changes Jacobs character too much in Eclipse. Originally he was one of my favorite characters (along with Alice). My feeling was that in the book Eclipse Jacob became unattractive physically and also in his personality. I ended up not liking him at all in this book. I think it would have been far more interesting if SM left Jacob completely human. That way it would have made a great tension for Bella to decide whether she should remain human and go with Jacob or to turn into a vampire and be with Edward. That choice would have been great tension and struggle and sacrifice. It would have made readers have a struggle who they would have wanted to see Bella with. The way the Jacob character was developed it never made me want her to be with him. He became to brutish and unlovable.
I believe when reading any book you have to feel some attachment or connection with the main character of the story. There was nothing in the character of Bella that drew me to her. Her personality, behaviors, fickleness and lack of self esteem do not build her into a main character I can care about, root for, or sympathize with. Not to mention where was the character development with Bella? SM changed the personalities of all the characters too much during the series. What intrigued me in the beginning ended up making me wonder why was I bothering to stick with this story and see where it was going? To sum it up Bella was too annoying and selfish. She was not a character I could see deserving of all this undying love, attention, affection, friendship and devotion that she was being lauded with. Also Bella was carried around , protected and babysat too much in this book. The author made Bella quite pathetic really with all her cuts, gashes, breaks, pains and all around physical sufferings. She was too weak in a very unflattering sort of way. I think Bella is a horrible role model for young girls.
Bella's disdain for marriages to some one she was supposedly so in love with no sense. She was okay with turning into a vampire, but not marriage? Did the author really need to carry that throughout Eclipse? What was the author thinking? I really believe she had run out of ideas and solutions. For them to get married really didn't seem to make sense to the story. She claimed to be ready to be devoted to a life long commitment to Edward, was marriage really necessary? And okay I see what SM tied to do and make it a moral issue, no sex before marriage and all that, but to me it just seemed very weak and ridiculous. If Bella loved and cared about Edward at all and that is what he wanted, she would have readily agreed to that and also wanted it too. I didn't understand why put that kind of objection from Bella into the mix of the story?
In my Opinion the books should have been rated for 16 years and up. I do not believe this book contains appropriate material and messages for young girls, really for teenagers at that matter. It is books about obsession and lust and desires not really about true love at all. In Eclipse SM tries to make Edward into a chivalrous and virtuous character to make his acclaimed "true love" for Bella make sense and be believable, instead of his obsessive thirst and lust after her blood that was the original premise in Twilight.
The author made all the sexy and dangerous edge to Edward disappear. She changes Edward to become too saintly and his original charisma gets washed out from what his character originally was. I am confused. Why does he love Bella so much? Because he is in lust after her blood and then therefore becomes obsessed with her? It never is pointed out to why he "loves" her. She doesn't seem to have any redeeming qualities to me. Bella is self conscious and clutsy, has no sense of style, no talents are mentioned, and is never satisfied or happy about anything, she is not even a good friend to any of her so called friends. She is often referred to as whining and complaining. I am not sure she is even a beauty based on the authors descriptions of her. SM makes her sound very ordinary and plain. The only positive qualities I can find in Bella are she is supposedly smart, although we don't ever really see that. And that she occasionally cares about the people she loves, however she is extremely selfish and is usually has ulterior motives.
I was so disgusted at the end of Eclipse I am thinking I won't read Breaking Dawn. I cheated and went ahead and read the reviews on Amazon for Breaking Dawn and I don't think I can stand to read it based on what I read happens with the story. I was already completely disgusted when Bella is kissing Jacob in the end of book three, she completely changed her mind to feeling/thinking that she is ALSO in LOVE with Jacob. Again I say "Really?" What about all the angst we were dragged through in New Moon when Edward was gone and the unending obsessive pages dedicated to Bella's painful, obsessive and passionately desperate love for Edward? Now she wants them both? Yet she is still going to Marry Edward, wants to have sex with him in the worst way and is still seriously wanting to become a Vampire?
Why these boys/men want her so much is beyond me. Edward should have some sense and leave her behind for someone more his equal. Bella and Jacob seem like they are meant for each other. They are both selfish and manipulative and dim witted and immature. Edward could do so much better. I wish the books ended after New Moon. Eclipse was such a disappointment in the end, I don't think I can stand to read Breaking Dawn. I feel the author went to far and should have quit while she was ahead, or waited and took more time to really think her story and the endings more clearly before she wrote Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Through out the books I felt at many times SM didn't know what she was doing and wrote whatever. SM is also guilty of not remembering her own rules throughout and parameters she originally set out in Twilight.
Also where are the animal lovers in review land? Am I the only one who had a problem with the whole, "It's okay to kill animals and drink their blood" thing? Sorry I am an animal lover and I had a problem with that attitude.
