Book Review: Must read book for just about everybody Summary: 4 Stars
Thomas Sowell's latest work is masterful in it's simplicity, by a combination of clever anecdotes, well-researched and articulated facts and statistics, and brilliance Sowell is able to masterfully explain away false assumptions the vast majority of us have simply taken for granted, and in the same breathe creates a powerful argument for reanalyzing many of the approaches and methods taken to examining many of the current problems of the day. A must read not just for people interested in economics, but for basically everybody to have a better understanding of the workings of the world we live in.
Book Review: Many Issues I Thought as Facts Are Actually Fallacies Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent book with great merit and eloquence written by Dr. Sowell. In this book, Dr. Sowell has successfully differentiated facts from fallacies of many today's socio-economical issues. After reading this book, I am surprised that much of the political rhetoric preached by the mass media and politicians, which I held as facts, turned out to be fallacies. With this book, Dr. Sowell has convinced me not to simply take any issue (e.g., race, income, housing, education, environmental and etc.) that seems logical and plausible superficially, but cannot stand up to scrutiny, as fact.
Book Review: Informative & interesting Summary: 5 Stars
I always read Dr. Sowell's columns faithfully but this is the 1st book of his that I ever bought. I'm sorry now that I waited so long. This book presents a great deal of factual information presented in a clear, common-sense, logical manner. I personally love economics & statistics & so on but Dr. Sowell never gets bogged down in the numbers, he just presents his points in a concise, straightforward, easy-to-follow manner. Anybody who may be intrigued by economics but is wary of dry, academic discussions should give this book (or other works by Dr. Sowell) a try.
Book Review: Great book, but at least 1 contradiction Summary: 4 Stars
A very good book, does a great job of pointing out many fallacies that circulate in the USA. But I was disappointed in his citing of black "family incomes" below the poverty line in chapter 6. The statistics he cites in this chapter to show that the civil rights movement had a small influence in black poverty contradicts his discussion in chapter 5 about income fallacies, specifically the use of "Household income" to demonstrate a lack of income improvement among the poor. That contradiction stuck out to me like a sore thumb! Otherwise, a very enlightening book!
