When I was a youngster back in the 1970s, there was not a book in our public library that I checked out more times or more regularly than Ed Emberly's "Make a World," and I'm thrilled to be able to pass it on to my children today. This book shows you how to quickly turn simple shapes and lines into wonderfully detailed little doodles that can be combined to literally "make a world." The fun part is mixing and matching them together in unlimited ways to make highly detailed scenes of teeming little communities -- honestly, this was SimCity or one of the Tycoon games (Rollercoaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, etc.) for the pre-computerized days...and it's still fun today. There is a review here that derides this book as "clip art," and the drawings are of that level of simplicity, but it's not about recreating the Mona Lisa, it's about taking fun little drawings of everyday things and combining them into your own little masterpiece. If giving "Make a World" as a gift, throw in a large sketch pad and a gigantic set of fine-point magic markers, which are the ultimate medium for bringing Mr. Emberly's magic world to life.
