Summary: 5 Stars
Hm. There's no real plot going on in this book. The whole thing basically can be boiled down to "Winnie grows apart from her best friend Amanda." Strange enough, I don't mind it. Winnie is refreshing as a protagonist of a junior chicklit. I was expecting another angst-ridden pre-teenager who constantly whines about everything in her life--things that are beyond superficial--and tries to pass her concerns as SOMETHING. Instead, I found Winnie, who is both smart and honest. Wow.
I like that the story if fast-paced--keeps it interesting--and that we get a glimpse of Winnie's relationship with various people around her. Assuming there will be six more books (one for each year), I think it will be interesting to see how Winnie grows as a person. (She's likeable enough for me to care.) I also like that the author doesn't dismiss Amanda as a complete jerk as she is shown as having as much regret as Winnie does. It would have been completely unrealistic for her not to care at all. I'm almost sure the two will be at least friends again in high school.
Definitely a book I would recommend to my younger friends.
