Book Reviews of Elsewhere

Book Review: Elsewhere
Summary: 5 Stars

The book, "Elsewhere," by Gabrielle Zevin, was excellent. I loved the idea of making a book where as time goes on, you go backwards. I thought the book was very creative and quite interesting. I thought the Well was a good idea, and the way the babies go back to Earth was very original. The author uses small clues to relate to things in real life and things that have to do with the place, Elsewhere. The idea of dying, going to Elsewhere, living what seems like an ordinary life, aging backwards, and being floated back to Earth to be born again, is a very different and creative way of looking at what will happen when you die. I felt everything was explained well using great detail. By the end of the book, I felt like I personally knew every character, and I had been the one living in Elsewhere. I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down. ADS

Book Review: One of the most creative books i've ever read
Summary: 4 Stars

The title of this review says it all, it's one of THE most CREATIVE books i've EVER read! Probably follows the Harry Potter series in a close second. I really love the idea of the book. The only thing i didn't particularly enjoy about this book is the way that there wasn't really a whole story, it was just kind of one of those 'the life and times' book. Just every day life in a book- except this book was much more interesting because first of all, the main character, Liz, is DEAD, and she lives in the afterworld which is really Elsewhere. So the book talks about her "life" (death) and times in Elsewhere. The whole idea of Elsewhere is fascinating and completely creative. A fabulous idea- it takes a true writer to invent someplace as intriguing as Elsewhere! Read the book!

Book Review: inconsistently applied
Summary: 3 Stars

The premise of this book is that when we die, we go to Elsewhere where we age backwards until we reach babyhood, at which point we are returned to Earth to live another life. It's an interesting idea that is unfortunately applied inconsistently here, to the detriment of the story. In some cases, the aging backward is portrayed as being only physical level, with emotional maturity at least staying constant, if not increasing as the years go on. As the main characters return to young childhood, though, they are portrayed as both looking and acting their "age." This discrepancy wouldn't have bothered me so much except that relative age becomes an issue in the relationships between some of the characters.

Book Review: Better Elsewhere than Nowhere
Summary: 4 Stars

What happens when you die? Do you go "up there"? Elsewhere is a YA book that has a unique view of the afterlife. The beginning starts with 15 year old, Elizabeth, waking up on a boat. She can't remember what has happened right before and she thinks she's dreaming for the longest time. The boat takes her to Elsewhere, where people go when they die. She meets her grandmother (who she had never met on Earth) there. In Elsewhere, instead of growing old, you get younger each year until you are a baby and are sent back to Earth. This is the story of Liz, dying yet still being able to live a life in Elsewhere. I think this book has some great insights on what can happen and a way to look at life - and death.
