Book Reviews of Empire (Tor Science Fiction)Book Review: Red-Blue Civil War Summary: 4 Stars
Empire (2006) is the first SF novel in this sequence. It is a future history novel set during a Republican presidency (although the POTUS is never named). It starts with a team of Special Ops soldiers in an Afghanistan village.
In this novel, Reuben Malich is a Captain in the US Army. He is the team leader of the Special Ops troopers in the village. His team is working to win the hearts and minds of the people.
Cecily Malich is Reuben's wife, She has Croatian ancestry and her husband comes from a Serbian family. She is a Liberal and her husband is a Conservative. Yet she knows how to bypass the irrelevant stuff and just love her husband and family.
Bartholomew Coleman is a Special Ops Captain in the US Army. Cole has also served in the sandbox.
Averell Torrent is a well known historian and a brilliant professor. He has an obsession with Octavian and the Roman Empire.
In this story, the insurgents draw off the Special Ops team with false information and then attack the village. But the team reckons that the report is a ruse. They return just as the insurgents are entering the village.
The team manages to kill all the insurgents. They also keep every villager alive, except for the old man who is the village leader. Then Malich displays his sorrow for the death of the old man in a public display of emotion and the villagers join him.
After his tour in Afghanistan, Malich is promoted to Major and returns to work on his Ph.D. at Princeton. Some of his classes are taught by Torrent. Although the professor calls him Soldier Boy, Malich learns much in the classes and Torrent seems to respect his opinions.
When Reuben gets his doctorate, he is assigned to a hush-hush job in the Pentagon. Then Cole is assigned as his assistant. But Malich is nowhere to be found in the Pentagon.
Cole talks to DeeNee -- the departmental secretary -- and gets little helpful information about his new job. In desperation, he calls Cecily and ask about the location of her husband. He is told that Reuben has gone to work in the Pentagon every day -- except when he is out of town -- and has been home every night during the week.
Cole solicits Cecily's help and cookies. He gets an invitation to the home and receives several chocolate chip cookies. He and Cecily talk about her husband and she confides some of her feelings. After leaving the house, he gets a call from Reuben.
Cole meets Reuben in a riverside park and discloses some responsiblities of the new job. It seems that Reuben has been tasked with determining the most likely method for terrorists to attack the White House. After submitting the report, he was away for a while. After returning, he checked the status of his report and did not find any indications that his report was read or that his recommendations were implemented.
As Reuben is explaining the contents of the report, Cole detects wave patterns in the river much like underwater swimmers. He asks his boss if such an underwater approach was part of the plan and Reuben confirms this supposition. Cole then convinces Reuben that someone is swimming toward the Tidal Basin.
Reuben and Cole attempt to call out on their cellphones and discover that someone is jamming the signal. They try a landline in the ranger headquarters and the cable is cut. They barrow weapons from the rangers and drive toward the White House.
This tale has the terrorists fire a rocket at the White House and kill the President and his national security team. The Vice-President is killed in an automobile "accident". Now the USA is left without anyone in charge.
Naturally, the Speaker of the House is sworn in as President. But none know who has assassinated the President. Was it foreign terrorists or domestic enemies?
In some respects, this story is not science fiction, but near-future fiction. Like many technothrillers, it seems to start at the time of publication (2006) and then carry the tale forward into a possible timeline. It introduces new -- but achievable -- technology that might have been under development back then.
Basically, the author takes the current Red-Blue division within the USA and shows a way that civil war might occur in this country. It also suggests that a sufficiently clever person might steer the country into such a war. Then it introduces some likeable people to resist such machinations.
This novel was written in conjunction with the development of the Empire video game. The two media influenced each other. This book makes one want to play the game, but apparently its release was cancelled.
This story seems to not be intended to be a series. But the author did write a sequel: Hidden Empire. Read and enjoy!
Recommended for Card fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of armed combat, strategic thinking, and personal courage.

Summary of Empire (Tor Science Fiction)The American Empire has grown too fast, and the fault lines at home are stressed to the breaking point. The war of words between Right and Left has collapsed into a shooting war, though most people just want to be left alone.
The battle rages between the high-technology weapons on one side, and militia foot-soldiers on the other, devastating the cities, and overrunning the countryside. But the vast majority, who only want the killing to stop, and the nation to return to more peaceful days, have technology, weapons and strategic geniuses of their own.
When the American dream shatters into violence, who can hold the people and the government together? And which side will you be on?
Orson Scott Card is a master storyteller, who has earned millions of fans and reams of praise for his previous science fiction and fantasy novels. Now he steps a little closer to the present day with this chilling look at a near future scenario of a new American Civil War.
