Book Reviews of Empire of Ivory (Temeraire, Book 4)Book Review: Captivating book Summary: 5 Stars
This book (and the 3 before that) is just great.
I was getting tired of fantasy, and then I bought the first 3 of the series. I couldn't stop reading !
The books are very interesting because they mix dragons with history. It's a very realistic world with dragons (probably because it is ours... with dragons). Characters are great (especially dragons), storyline is captivating... One of the finest series I read recently !
Beware, though... There are 5 books now in the Temeraire Series. I'm still in the fifth when I write this, so I don't know for sure there won't be a sixth. And you can't really read only part of them. Unless you like to stop reading in the middle of the storyline...
Book Review: Jumped in with this book Summary: 4 Stars
I picked up this book at a used book store and didn't initially realize it was the fourth in the series. There were some references I didn't get, but overall it wasn't too bad jumping into the middle as it were. As a kid I read the Dragonrider series and really liked them, and was not disappointed with this book. I plan on purchasing the first three so that I can catch up on the back story that I missed. Normally I was a pure sci-fi reader and rarely ventured into the fantasy realm, but there are so many good fantasy authors now (who are not so far out there that the hard core SCI of the sci-fi group wouldn't like them) that I have expanded my reading, and I include Naomi Novik to be in that group.
Book Review: If you like Anne McCaffrey you'll love these!! Summary: 5 Stars
I got hooked on these books after downloading the first one for FREE on my new Kindle. I burned through His Majesty's dragon in just a few days; preferring it by far to any of the drivel that was on TV.
I was thrilled to see that it was one in a series. I've already inhaled the rest of these great books and can't wait for the release of the next one.
I'm a huge fan of Anne McCaffrey and the Dragons of Pern, so maybe that's why I found these books so compelling. That, plus the combined mix of historical fiction make them a fun read. Forget American Idol, the Bachelor and whatever else they're pitching on TV. Plug the Temeraire series in instead. An excellent read!!
Book Review: Even more gutsy Summary: 5 Stars
There are plenty of great summaries out there, so I'm offering advice and praise. First, read the other books. Second, the best feature of this novel is the maturing of Lawrence and Temeraire. If you loved them before, you'll fall in love all over again. The new civilization can seem like it's going out on a limb, but take that mental leap of faith. Like the cure, Novik makes it realistic. She "earns" it with meticulous and rich detail. My only criticism: you will want the fifth book so badly after reading this one that you maybe tempted to do something rash. Take calming breaths. Harassing letters will not make her write faster.
Book Review: A bit too much Summary: 3 Stars
The characters and locales continue to display their enchantment in this latest episode but I have to admit that the premise is becoming a bit worn.
The ending cliffhanger relies on a moral demarcation in the butchery of war that comes across as a bit strained. When humans and dragons butcher each other as a routine matter of conflict, it strains credibility to imagine such fine lines being drawn as to the permissable modes of butchery.
That being said, the book is a good read and the characters continue to draw the reader into its vibrant world. Three stars out of 5.
