This is one of a series of three books; the others cover the spiritual and herbal traditions associated with ancient Thai massage.
Many things set this wonderful text apart: it is accurate, clear, and concise, written by someone with a deep and genuine love and understanding of the subject, the culture, and the tradition. Photographs and descriptions of the individual postures are superior to anything else available.
Please note: no book can ever, nor should it, replace personal instruction. Personal instruction is required for safety and full understanding of the very subtle art of Thai massage, and the pacing of flow and fluidity of transition between postures cannot be taught any other way other than to study under a master and receive thoughtful correction. But this is an excellent text to refresh the memory for postures not used so often and the most valuable resource you will find on the history and background of Thai massage and the mental preparation overlooked by other authors and even respectable teachers.
All of his works are composed and offered in true Metta spirit. As Americans learn about the amazing benefits of traditional Thai massage it is becoming the trendy treatment for spas to offer. Unfortunately for both practitioner and recipient, the importance of a Metta practice and spiritual preparation are entirely overlooked in the quickie courses that crop up around every new popular trend. This book can help fill that gap, so at least new therapists may understand that it is not so much the protocol of movement but the prayers and intention behind them that actually make possible the real healing magic.
If you are considering the serious study of traditional Thai massage this book is both an excellent introduction for beginners and a valuable reference text for the experienced therapist.
