Book Reviews of Espresso Tales: A 44 Scotland Street Novel (2)

Book Review: as addictive as the title
Summary: 4 Stars

It's gotten to the point now that I will read a subway map if Alexander Mccall Smith wrote it. Truly exceptional writer.
I think this sequel is one of the few that is better than the original. Perhaps that is because the characters are more fleshed out. We spend less time getting to know them and more time following their pursuits.
Like 44 Scotland Street, this book has no real plot and no real direction. However, each of the characters has his own daily adventure, brilliantly and addictively catalogued by Smith.
Put this one (and the first) on your summer reading list.

Book Review: More tales of the absurd
Summary: 3 Stars

I love a clever, witty, funny book, and this is another great one from Alexander McCall Smith. It was fun to hear the continuing saga of the denizens of 44 Scotland Street, and it's amazing to think that Smith wrote this in installments for the local paper. I particularly enjoyed the story of Bertie and his antics at school, including his new friends Tofu, Merlin, and Hiawatha.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first -- the sections about Ramsey Dumbarton were incredibly boring and I ended up skipping them -- but it was still quite entertaining.

Book Review: I Love This Series
Summary: 5 Stars

There is one problem with Smith's '44 Scotland Stree' series...and that is that you don't want the books to end. I am pacing myself reading 'Espresso Tales' to make the pleasure last. I'm an avid reader, and I know no other author who mixes pure entertainment with deep insights--and humor--and does it in such a gentle way. The fact that Smith wrote these stories for continuing newspaper publication--sometimes on the fly--just illustrates what a master he is. When does the next book in this series arrive?

Book Review: Just as good as Number 1.
Summary: 5 Stars

Well I enjoyed the second volume just as much as I did the first. Strange. Not actually sure why I am enjoying this series as much as I do. I guess it is because Alexander McCall Smith inhabits the same world I do. It is a world where everyone is doing his/her best to survive - nobody is really a hero or a villain. Everyone has a personality with flaws and strengths.

I can't think of anyone in his novels I'd like to be - but everyone seems fun to watch. I guess I'll try book #3.

Book Review: Savory
Summary: 5 Stars

I actually had to pace myself, because I didn't want to finish to quickly and leave these wonderful characters of 44 Scotland Street. So many characters are gems, but the story that seems to hold the most interest is poor young Bertie and his overbearing monster of a mother. Can't wait for the third book this fall, and the knowledge that we'll luckily get to be with these interesting and offbeat inhabitants for a bit longer.
