Book Review: Masterfully written

I have read few books that are so well written. This book is enjoyable for the story line and the characters, but almost more enjoyable for McCall Smith's masterful writing. I savor every sentence for its humor and whimsy. He also has great insight into human nature and paints our idiosyncrasies in a kinder light that makes the reader feel more inclined to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.Book Review: Smith does it again

Alexander McCall Smith has a knack for capturing characters, breathing life into them and making you want to know more about them. The only complaint I could have is that you want more..but then again even if the book was 1000 pages, I would still want more. I can't wait until the next volume to see what happens to Pat, Bertie, Irene, Domenica, Big Lou and yes, even Bruce.Book Review: More about Bertie . . .

Little Bertie has some triumphs in this charming sequel to 44 Scotland Street. Lots of new giggles in Espresso Tales and just as delightful as 44 Scotland street is. Alexander McCall Smith is a genius who captures the essence of a character in as few words as humanly possible. There's only one reason to buy this sequel to 44 Scotland Street - to see what happens to Bertie. Otherwise it adds little to the tales already told, and the new characters are boring, to say the least. I was suprised to find I didn't like it - it's the only Smith book I haven't totally enjoyed so far. Anything but this, that's what I recommend.Book Review: Love this series

I got hooked on Alexander McCall Smith with the First Ladies Detective series. Then I wanted to read everything else he has written and I haven't been dissappointed yet. I love this series of 44 Scotland Street. The characters are great and eccentric and normal and you just want to see what happens next and what choices they each make.
