Book Review: Eh....if it floats your boat.

I was not as blown away by this book as other reviewers. Maybe I'm old and cynical? Two things really got in the way of my utter enthrallment with this book. First, despite what she claims are years of graduate school level study, she can't write worth a doggone. She keeps repeating herself over and over and over. If I were senile, I might need to be reminded every other page that if I study Tarot, I associate Swords with air and not Wands. Why even bring that up at all, save to flaunt that you've studied Tarot? Why repeat it?
The book suffers from a lack of organization, or, conversely, she padded the hell out of it. That might explain why she keeps saying things like "as I just said" or "as you'll discover later." That sort of 'tell 'em what you're gonna tell em, tell em, and then tell 'em what you told 'em' writing NEVER worked. Sometimes it's better to make the reader draw these connections for themselves than to spell it out for them. We're not stupid and don't need EVERYTHING spelled out for us.
Okay, second objection: this book came out in 2004. She's obsessed, apparently, with creating a clear divide between her tradition (Feri) and everything else. MANY TIMES (see point above) she tells us that 'this is unique to Feri'. However, just about every time she used that preface, it was something I'd already encountered, like 20 YEARS ago, through Starhawk. It seems kind of disingenuous to me to take material that was available to the public two decades ago, through Starhawk's work (the Iron and Pearl Pentagrams), and jump up and down and say, no, darnit, it's OURS! If Feri was so all-fired-up about its own uniqueness, it shouldn't have shared so much information with Reclaiming. Or, more honestly, if both evolved together, credit should be SHARED with Reclaiming.
Honestly, if you've read Starhawk, there's not much for you here beyond some sexiness. The exercises are all right, but not earth shattering. The book isn't particularly emotionally deep--she tells you, for examples, some Gods of Feri, but doesn't tell you much about how to work with them, other than 'make contact and you'll figure it out for yourself.' I need to pay money for that advice?! All in all, I felt like I was sold a 20 year old used car, that had a cheaper engine substituted. Starhawk's work on the Pentagrams has a greater emotional resonance, without the silly dances. But that's just me.
