Book Reviews of Face Forward

Book Review: Fabulous, Creative and Artistic!
Summary: 5 Stars

Creation, transformation and inspiration are the words that come to mind when you turn the pages of this beautiful book. Aucoin, once again, shows his extreme talent. Do you prefer the sultry look of Cleopatra or the magnificent wonder of Bette Davis' eyes? Who ever imagined one could transform the stars into so many dramatic, exotic creations? The book is filled with tips and techniques that, through the magic of cosmetics, will give you a variety of looks from vamp, glitz and sophistication to downright cool, earthy, and unusual. With a little know-how and patience, you, too, can create a whole new look.

As a suggestion, whatever brand of cosmetics you choose, make sure it is the very best you can afford. A professional and artistic image is very difficult to achieve with a low-end cosmetic; the texture generally does not allow for proper blending, mascaras "clump", foundations cast an off-colour hue and the overall result does not lend to a finished, professional look. There are so many different "faces" in this book, one could change their personal image as often as a change of clothes! Whatever your age, or preference in style and image, this fantastic book has something for everyone. Who said you couldn't "make heads turn" or have the pizzaz of a glamorous star? Go for it, spice up your life, buy this book! Aucoin makes it all seem....oooh, so easy!

Book Review: This book is unbelievable, but spare me with the politics...
Summary: 4 Stars

I absolutely love Kevyn Aucoin. He is not only very talented and extremely creative, but he also seems to genuinely love and respect women. I think he was one of the people responsible for Courtney Love's transformation a few years back. You will not believe how much he makes celebrities look like other people, it is mind-blowing. (If any of you know who the hilarious Amy Sedaris is and have seen her on "Strangers with Candy," you MUST look at this book!) This book is very inspiring, even to "every day" people.

HOWEVER...

Spare me the political stuff. I really felt offended by some of the things he says. At one point he refers to 50s family values being questionable. I wish he had either explained himself a little or omitted it. Not all of the women reading his book are single, fabulous 20-somethings living in NYC or LA. Some of us are stay-at-home mothers, housewives, etc., and I for one felt a little, I guess, excluded. It just ruined the book for me in a way (hence the 4 stars). There are some hypocritical statements in the book, if you ask me. Not sure why he feels he needs to include them. I'll still look at it again, but I'll mostly avoid the print, and I probably won't buy it for the aforementioned reasons(although I do have his last book).

Book Review: Good Stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

Kevyn Aucoin's third book, and it's his best yet. The book covers structure (face, skin, teeth), shape (brows, lips, eyes), balance (light/light faces, light/dark faces, dark/light faces, dark/dark faces), color, texture, and setting. The Face to Face section gives step-by-step instructions, aided by photos, to the everyday make-up routines of ordinary people, as well as a few famous faces. The next section of the book, and my personal favorite, is Dimensions. Celebrities and some lesser-known faces are transformed into beauties of the past (following the present setting of the last chapter). Tina Turner is morphed into Cleopatra, Cher into Queen Isabella, Susan Sarandon in Bette Davis, even Gwyneth Paltrow into James Dean. The final section of the book, Moving Forward, contains looks for the new millenium. The past, present, future theme of the book keeps everything well-organized, while the great photos and step-by-step illustrations keep everything bright. Kevyn Aucoin's openess to all kinds of looks is the true core of the book, however. I recommend Making Faces to anyone who is ready for a look at eternal beauty.

Book Review: My first make-up book...
Summary: 5 Stars

Back several years ago I wanted to get the "Making Faces" book when it first came out but missed out. This time around I made sure that I got it. From what I could remember, this book was similar to its predecessor, but an updated version. It was good in showing visual step-by-steps, as well as before and after photos. The models ranged from pre-teen to older women, men, Asian-Americans, Caucasians, and African-American - and they didn't ALL have perfect skin either!

The only things I would have wished for were complete step-by-steps and some more "everyday" model makeovers, with skin problems ranging from unevenness to blotchiness, and from mild acne to severe acne-prone skin. It would truly have been an impressive feat to see that! Of course, I really looked forward to the section where he turned people into other celebrities, very impressive work indeed.

I suppose this was more of a glamour-type of book rather than an amateur's makeup how-to book, but if you have any bit of experience, even if it's just about once a month (which is the case for me), it's really easy to catch on and eventually you'll be able to emulate the images like the ones in this book.

Book Review: Intelligent, Talented Kevyn Aucoin
Summary: 5 Stars

If only I could get him to do my makeup!

Kevyn Aucoin once again proves himself. Not only are his makeovers phenomenal, his accompanying writings are fascinating. This is a man with an appreciation for the beauty of women - women of all shapes and sizes. His subjects are not always supermodels. Next to pictures of Christy Turlington and Gwenyth Paltrow are pictures of everday women - women of age, color, and size.

Some of the pictures do look a little airbrushed - but the effect is still phenomenal. You will not believe your eyes - this man can work magic.

Women looking to learn how to apply makeup should buy Kevyn's book, "Making Faces" before this one. This is a more advanced book, discussing facial shapes in depth and requiring a greater knowledge of products and colors.

Women with an appreciation for cinema of the 30s, classic fashion designers will love Kevyn's transformations. The most entertaining part of the book is the last few pages, where Kevyn experiments with eggplant-black foundation, glitter lipgloss, blue lipstick and crimson eyeshadow.

This book will make you feel beautiful by just sitting and reading it. Kevyn is my hero!
