Book Reviews of Face ForwardBook Review: Kevyn The "magician" Aucoin Summary: 5 Stars
There could be so much I can say about this simply fantastic collection of transformations of the stars. I just recieved the book last night as a gift. I already consider it one of my best "reads". What I like about the book the best, has to be the makeovers of Tina Turner & Celine Dion. They are not what we would normally expect either woman to look like. The photography is amazing in the book, revealing each model's 2nd side. There are even 3rd sides to some people. I wish there were more everyday person makeovers shown in the book, but Kevyn has reserved the place for the stars. I've tried to do makeovers on different people, but the results weren't satisfying as looking at these pictures. Personally, I'd rather look at the books than do actual transformations. I wish there was a smaller version (paperback) of this book, to give to friends. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates the time & talent one can have for such a career. Bet you can't wait til Kevyn puts another book out! It would be great "IF" he does. Until then, we'll enjoy his "Face forward". Did my review help you?
Book Review: Eye Candy! Summary: 5 Stars
For those of us who love makeup, this is fun and inspires one to try something different! I wish I had time, patience, and the vision of Kevin Aucoin to do some of these transformations, even if just for fun. Along with demonstrating various "looks," he takes (mostly) famous faces and transforms them into others with makeup--for example, he turns Martha Stewart (!) into Veronica Lake, Amber Valetta becomes Clark Gable AND Carole Lombard, and Gina Gershon morphs into Sophia Loren. There are a few black women and fewer Asians, so if you are looking for a lot of diversity in this book, you may be disappointed. Still, I love this book, even though I don't actually wear as much makeup as is shown here. Some of never grow out of playing dress-up! Rest in peace, dear Kevin. You are missed.
Book Review: versus bobbi brown Summary: 5 Stars
This book complements very well the beauty book by bobbi brown. Hers talks about philosophy, how to create "daily" face using one's asset in the best possible way. It is very gender sensitive, race sensitive. Kevyn Aucoin book is how to create an impeccable beautiful face. He and his models were kind and courageous enough to give us before and after pictures; to see what a make-up can do (and it really does change the faces), and how much our self-esteem is undermined by those created faces in the fashion magazine. Most faces on those magazines are artistic creations and we don't need to feel disappointed by our naked faces; anyone can put great make-up as Kevyn shows. I would recommend that everyone reads those two books, this one (and also other two books by him) and the book by bobbi.
Book Review: Amazing Artistry but Lacking in "How To!" Summary: 3 Stars
Although Kevin Aucoin is an unaparalleld make-up artist, I was disappointed in the lack of practical hints and techniques for the average person in this coffee table book. Another irritation is the refusal to give name brands for the various foundations, mascaras, blushes, and liptsticks used. The excuse that Kevin gives that, "they may be out of use in three months" just doesn't fly. The real reason is based on the $(dollar) sign--Revlon, Chanel, Arden, Estee Lauder et al. may not hire Mr. Aucoin if he recommends one brand over another. This is not helpful to the reader who has no idea what a "reddish-brown cream blush" or a "light beige lipstick" is.That being said, the make overs of stars and every day people are amazing.
Book Review: Learn some make-up tricks from a true magician! Summary: 5 Stars
Kevyn has done it again. This is his newest book, following Making Faces, which was a huge success. Kevyn offers very useful tips for make-up application, choosing colors, and finding your own style. In his books, he gives make-overs to celebrities, and normal folks as well. His celebrity makeovers are amazing- in this book, he transforms Martha Stewart to Veronica Lake! You will be amazed and entertained by these makeovers, even if you don't need the make-up tips (but who doesn't need to learn from the best! ). This is a great book to leave on your coffee table for guests to flip through. It's fun to try and guess who the celebrity is (Gwyneth Paltrow as James Dean? ). This is a great gift for anyone who's into make-up, fashion, or celebrities. Check it out!
