Book Reviews of Fade Away (Myron Bolitar)Book Review: Flash in the pan Summary: 4 StarsGreg Downing a pro basketball player is missing. The team owner, Clip Arnstein hires Myron Bolitar, a washed-out player turned sports agent (and sometimes detective), to find Greg. Implausibly, Clip offers Myron Greg's slot on the team--for the purpose of getting closer to the players, some of whom may know something. Until Myron's knee was badly damaged 10 years earlier in a college game by player Burt Wesson, Greg and Byron had been rivals. The opportunity to live his dream, even if a sham, blinds Myron to the implausibility of the offer. It turns out that Clip had a more substantial motive. As the novel progresses new characters are introduced, relationships slowly come into focus, and unexpected complications are revealed. Before long, it seems likely that Greg is in hiding because of gambling debts, and someone has been murdered in his house. Myron's feelings and experiences in achieving his dream majors forms a compelling back story.
The characters are full, rich, and compelling. The plot is intriguing and keeps readers glued to the very end. However, the end is abrupt and a bit unsatisfying. In retropect, the motivations for the major events seem a little thin. But most readers will have little time for retrospection, as they will be looking for another Coben novel to read.
In addition to those mentioned above, the Bolitar-series regulars, the supporting cast, and incidental characters, the characters to pay special attention to are:
Emily Downing-Greg's ex-wife, who is fighting Greg for the custody of their children
Thumper-the "official" team groupie
Carla (Lis Gorman)-former female member of a 1970s radical criminal gang (the Raven Brigade)
Leon White-Greg's friend
Fiona White--Leon's wife
Audrey--a female sports writer
In my opinion, Coben's other Bolitar novels are little more than excuses to write novels around the theme of "sport angst" (in which case I feel the need to have barf bag handy). Not so in "Fade Away". In "Fade Away", I actually found the "sport angst" to be human and compelling. "Fade Away" is the only Bolitar novel up to the consistent and exceptional quality of Coben's non-Bolitar novels.
Summary of Fade Away (Myron Bolitar)The home was top-notch New Jersey suburban. The living room was Martha Stewart. The basement was Legos--and blood. For sports agent Myron Bolitar, the disappearance of a man he'd once competed against was bringing back memories--of the sport he and Greg Downing had both played and the woman they both loved. Now, among the stars, the wanna-bes, the gamblers and groupies, Myron is unraveling the strange, violent life of a sports hero gone wrong, and coming face-to-face with a past he can't relive, and a present he may not survive. In novels that crackle with wit and suspense, Edgar Award winner Harlan Coben has created one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction--Myron Bolitar--a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent who grows more and more engaging and unpredictable with each page-turning appearance.
