Book Reviews of Fade Away (Myron Bolitar Mysteries)Book Review: Bolitar At The Top Of His Game Summary: 5 Stars
I've not read all of the Myron Bolitar series yet, but Fade Away rates as the best I've read to this point (and all are good). A couple of factors help make this particular story stand out.
First, and foremost, since the storyline centers on basketball, it is much more personal for Myron than when other sports are featured. As a reader, I both celebrated and agonized as Myron tackled his life-long dream.
Secondly, while there are the trademark Coben plot twists and turns, they are not overdone in Fade Away. All of the plot twists ultimately add depth to the story and aren't inserted simply to keep the reader off balance. Very well done.
The secondary characters, Win & Esperanza, as always, add a tremendous amount. The 'guest stars' (the team players and administration) are entirely believable as they each attempt to protect their own turf.
Book Review: enjoyable if not taken too seriously Summary: 4 Stars
These novels are best when you take them for what they are. They are light mystery novels with a little bit of comedy and witty dialogue mixed in.
This is the third novel in the Myron Bolitar series (the first two are Deal Breaker and Drop Shot) and it follows basically the same formula. It isn't necessary, however, to read the first two to enjoy this one. Coben does a good job of constructing the novels with the ability for each one to stand on it's on if needed.
I enjoy the dialogue as much as anything else. Coben is able to keep me very entertained with the back and forth between his very original characters as we follow them through plot twists, turns, and suprises.
This novel is more sports based than the other two which made it that much more enjoyable to me.
A fun light read that doesn't take itself too seriously. You shouldn't either.
Book Review: Coben is one of the best out there. Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first Harlan Coben book I read, but it was not the last. I am writing this review several months after reading this, but I feel it was so good that it deserves further kudos. The story is extremely good, there are many twists and turns, and the characters are witty and likeable no matter how cold they can be at times. I would recommend both Robert Crais and Robert Parker to those of you who like Harlan Coben. I have read several Robert Crais books, try "the Monkey's Raincoat" or "Stalking the Angel" and "Playmates" by Parker. The stories twists are not on par with Coben (but few are), but the stories themselves and characters run alongside Myron and Winn. For anyone wondering about "Fade Away" if the other reviews haven't given you enough of an idea, read it now or you'll be sorry. It won the Edgar Award with good reason.
Book Review: Fast paced witty and intriguing Summary: 4 Stars
Marvin Bolitar current sports agent, ex FBI agent and ex basketball would be superstar (until injury robbed him of his big chance)is once again drawn into a murder mystery. Posing as a new member of the New Jersey Dragons Bolitar is asked to try find the team's missing superstar. As the book unfolds Marvin must face the demons of his old injury and the career that never was, mix it up with red brigade style terrorists and find out the truth about the absent star. Ably assisted by his psychotic sidekick Win the end result is never in any real doubt. The plot is interesting in a non taxing murder mystery way and holds it's own with that genre. The difference from the pack is the pace at which the story moves and the wit of the dialogue. I have become a big fan of the Marvin Bolitar series of books by Mr Corbin and find the mix of murder and wit intoxicating.
Book Review: Very good Summary: 4 Stars
Coben writes a skillfully plotted, entertaining hardboiled PI novel that falls just a little bit short of my favorites (Parker's Spenser, Block's Scudder, etc.) Our hero, Myron Bolitar, is a wisecracking sports agent who literally enters the world of the NBA to track down his team's missing star. He gets help along the way from an enigmatic tough guy "sidekick" and a spunky female assistant named Esperanza. Doesn't sound all that original, does it? But Coben pulls it off by making his characters interesting and human. The story is fast paced and has lots of twists and turns as Bolitar tries to find the missing star, tries to solve a related murder, and deal with the problems of his own past. Very entertaining, and like all great mystery novels, it leaves you wanting more Bolitar.
