Book Reviews of Faefever (Fever, Book 3)Book Review: It's a great book and what an evil cliffhanger! Summary: 5 Stars
It's cliffhangers like these that almost make me wish I had waited until all five books were out. Almost.
I was afraid that with Faefever being the third book it would be an info dump of exposition. While it's true we get a lot of information, Karen Marie Moning tells it in a gripping, taut and thoroughly surprising way. Mac, Barrons and V'lane are still searching for the Book aka The Beast. They are still not trusting each other or sharing information and it's so silly. If only the three of them could sit down and talk, openly and honestly, it would prevent so many problems, but KMM writes a funny scene that dispenses with that idea pretty quick. It seems both V'lane and Barrons have a long and nasty history and although Mac is dying to know, they aren't sharing. It's almost as if they are fighting over her and the first one in her pants, wins. Since Mac can't trust anyone, she spreads her eggs throughout all the baskets she can find, including Inspector O'Duffy, Christian MacKeltar and Dani, one of her fellow sidhe-seers. Derrick O'Bannion makes an appearance, making nasty threats about the upcoming Halloween, and he's seen with an aquaintance of Mac and Barrons that's sure to have repercussions in later books. The Lord Master also makes an appearance. He's trying to wheedle his way into her good graces, just like all the other men in her life right now. This encounter prompts her to ask Barrons for help in resisting Voice, which allows for some interesting byplay and a powerful scene between the two of them. Barrons becomes a much more aggressive, brutal and enigmatic character than ever before while V'lane, however, turns into almost a pussycat. He's toned down the death-by-sex vibe and Mac even turns to him for bodyguard service. While this book has a dark feel to it, it's also arguably one of the funniest offerings in the Fever series to date. Mac and Barrons continue to hunt but she's afraid deep down, of whether or not she can trust Barrons to do the right thing if they find the Book. Improvising the best she can, she leads the men on wild goose chases, until one night, she can't hide her reaction from Barrons and they come the closest they've ever been to the book and Barrons' own arrogance and certainty is put to the test. When that proves futile, the only thing they can do now is help shore up the walls between Man and Faery, which means joining forces with the MacKeltars. Barrons journeys to Scotland to lend his own special brand of Druid magic and Mac stays in Dublin to try and help with her fellow sidhe-seers as they perform their own rituals. It becomes a race against time to keep the walls up and the horrors of the Unseelie out of the world of Man.
There isn't much to actually outline in ways of story except to say that everyone is in kind of a holding pattern. They are just looking for the book and waiting for Halloween, when Barrons and the MacKeltars attempt to rebuild the walls between Man and Faery. We learn a lot more about the sidhe-seer organization and the Hallows, both Seelie and Unseelie, plus the Unseelie King. Christian MacKeltar steps into the ring as another possible love interest for Mac, creating a wary, prickly threesome and speaking of threesomes, wow! I think it fair to add in my review that there is a three way gang rape in the end of the book with Mac as the victim. It was not pleasant but just know that in this reader's humble opinion, it didn't bother me in the slightest. Some people will compare this to an orgy a la Laurell K. Hamilton and it wasn't. It was not graphic or exploitive. It was pertinent to the story and to be honest, I felt like this was a long time coming. With all that talk about death-by-sex, it was time for an example.
Ahhh, Barrons. Mac says to herself during her many musings that she has apologized and made excuses for him in the past and it's true. He's enigmatic and evasive to say the least and in this book he's down right brutal. He lets go with his domineering, dark side a lot more in Faefever and I still think he's hot as hell. Some might say he crossed a line with Mac with his Voice coaching but like Mac said, she was just fooling herself as to his true nature. The layers are being stripped away and I for one, loved it. We'll just have to wait and see what lies underneath that impenetrable cloak of his.
I really enjoyed Faefever. We get some more glimpses of the MacKeltars in this one and Christian is shaping up to be worthy of the name Keltar and with his long dark hair and golden eyes, remind you of anyone? Once again Karen Marie Moning teases and torments us with innuendoes between Mac and Barrons. I also felt there was an intriguing clue about Barrons' origins tucked away in plain sight. Oooo. Time will tell. While unfortunately there isn't much going on during this book, the humor and tension is still very much alive in it. The ending ramped up my excitement for the fourth book, Dreamfever and ahhhhh! It's going to be a year long wait!!!!
