Book Reviews of False Colours

Book Review: Colorful characters
Summary: 5 Stars

It was a delight to find, on my last trip to London, that Georgette Heyer's novels are being reissued in quality paperback form. I snatched up this one to read on the plane going home, glad that the cover--a 19th-century painting of a man in a chair, not your usual "romantic novel" graphic--didn't give me away as a "romance reader." i even tried to get my male companion interested in it, since like so many Heyers, it has a strong male protagonist whose problem is the engine of the story. (Of course my friend was too wary of the "romance.") But also like all Heyers, it had wonderful, believable, lovable characters all around, and a delightfully unexpected resolution. The story takes a while to get off the ground, and I was reminded again of Heyer's tendency toward long involved paragraphs, but I've never minded such "defects" in truly good novels, and in fact, I only wish her books were longer. I love to get to the satisfying ending, but then I want more!

Book Review: If you love exclamation points, read this book!
Summary: 2 Stars

I found this book to be nearly impossible to read! Georgette Heyer's characters end nearly every sentence in an exclamation point! They don't converse with each other as much as shout to each other! Her characters end up sounding like simpletons!

Honestly, the plethora of exclamation points in this book gave me a headache. At one point, I even considered grabbing a bottle of white-out to eliminate them. The time that would be required to obliterate their vast number, however, was prohibitive. Heyer can't hold a candle to Austen, nor to Anya Seton, and while Austen can write humor that is actually laugh-out-loud, Heyer's attempts to be amusing fall flat. I can't imagine picking up another book by Heyer - one was punishment enough.

Book Review: My favorite Heyer novel
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so pleased that this is back in print and for that matter I'm pleased to see that quite a few other Heyer novels are back in print. If you have never read Georgette Heyer before, this is a good one to start with. Other reviewers sum up the plot quite nicely so I won't reiterate that. What I will say is that her characters here are some of the most charming she has ever created. Sir Bonamy Ripple is marvelous. He does provide some expected comic relief, but he also has some moments of insight and observation that made for unexpected delight. Happy reading!

Book Review: False Colours
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this book specially lady Denville who stole away the spotlight from the twins and the heroine Cressy in my opinion. She is beautiful, kind, simple, extravagant and had no clue in financing. In the meantime she loves her sons and they adore her. I loved the bond that the twins have for each other and how they come to each others rescue no matter what. The most funny part for me is when Lady Denville asks Rippley to marry her :) Just loved that part.

What can I say Georgette Heyer is the best.

Book Review: One of Heyer's best
Summary: 5 Stars

and that's saying a lot. Heyer's books are sometimes achingly romantic (Venetia and Devil's Cub come to mind) but are more often funny. False Colours is one of her funniest, with a wonderfully drawn secondary cast of characters, particularly the delightful Lady Denville, and a charming and warmhearted Hero and Heroine that you are really rooting for. Definitely a must own Heyer, I think it ranks with Sylvester, The Grand Sophy and Fredericka as one of her best.
