Book Review: Great characters and story, sketchy science

If I, as a white woman (although with dark hair, not blonde like Dana Clarke in Family Tree) married to a white man (although Jewish, not WASP like Hugh Clarke) gave birth to an African-American baby, I would be pretty bewildered.
Barbara Delinsky skillfully captures the emotions of the couple faced with this surprise in Family Tree. At the opening of the book they are the ideal couple on the eve of the birth of their first child - everything perfect in their tidy suburban world, from the hand-painted nursery to the fully-prepared birth coach husband. Once baby Elizabeth and her cocoa skin and black curls are revealed, things predictably unravel. Hugh thinks Dana has been unfaithful. Dana assumes that her nontraditional family background has the woodpile with the African genes.
Family Tree is not a romance, nor are there sisters or a studly gardener (to name some common elements in Delinsky books). Delinsky is growing as a writer in her abilities to explore emotions and relationships. There are subplots, but Family Tree is really the story of Dana and Hugh.
When I finished the book my first thoughts were of admiration for Delinsky's talents. After sleeping on it, the improbability of it really weighed on me. Delinsky has credited medical experts in her acknowledgements, but I still found her explanation of how the baby's heritage resulted in her appearance to strain credulity. I don't want to give away plot points, but if you've read the book and you know any mixed race families, you'll understand what I mean. This is a four star book with minus one star for credibility.
So enjoy this book, but don't think too much.
Summary of Family Tree
An unforgettable novel about family, race, and the choices people make in times of crisis.Dana Clarke has just given birth to her first child. The little girl is lovely but no one can help noticing how little she resembles her parents. Dana's husband, among others, suspects that she may have had an affair.
