Book Reviews of Family TreeBook Review: Riveting! Summary: 5 Stars
This book held my interest from the first page to the very last. It was beautifully and powerfully written without being preachy. I think that another reviewer described the main characters as behaving like children. Perhaps that is so......but who really behaves perfectly during a crisis of identity? I think the characters were drawn in a totally human way......imperfect and believable. Sure it was easy to dislike Hugh for his actions but given the circumstances he had no choice but to ask the questions he did. There was an incredible depth of emotion here and I couldn't put it down for a second. I borrowed the book from the library but I'm going to go buy a copy myself because this is one that I will read again.
Book Review: Wonderful read! Summary: 5 Stars
I read this wonderful book in one sitting. If I have any complaint, it was too short.
This is a story about family and relationships when faced with the unexpected. I too am an OB nurse, and have many times seen the opposite situation..the infant of African-Americans who looks "white." I have spent hours in my career reassuring these fathers.
But even more important, Family Tree is about accepting all children, no matter their skin color, hair color (red hair in boys can be a disappointment for some shallow people)or a congenital impairment. Love and acceptance is all children need.
Barbara Delinsky has told a beautiful story, and I thank her. This is an example of why I fell in love with books!
Book Review: Too bland, but the knitting part was good.... Summary: 2 Stars
I guess I was hard up for something to read when I chose this one. Definitely chick lit.: gorgeous heroine and handsome hero surmount racial obstacles together, all the while seeing everything through rose-colored glasses and a haze of character that doesn't exist under the Bush administration. Well, at least she got something right about the knitting culture: They DO talk about you in knitting stores if you don't buy the expensive yarn. You could be doing geek knitting so complicated that it takes a 160 I.Q. and pages of graph paper to figure it out, but if you're not using horrendously expensive natural fiber, you WILL be denigrated. I would rather have seen that angle developed.
Book Review: Just scimmed the surface! Summary: 4 Stars
I have to admit that I enjoyed this book, however it ended with so many issues unresolved and incomplete. The premise of this book had me eagerly anticipating it's arrival, however while the plot could have gone so many ways, it left me waiting for just ONE PERSON to stand up to Hugh or Eaton to explain that being of mixed heritage is not a bad thing! I had hoped it would be Dana or her mother-in-law to no avail. That is my only criticism however. I loved how all of the characters intertwined by the end, and have already ordered more Delinsky novels. This was an interesting ready that I can only hope will spark more novels on this subject.
Book Review: Giving Birth leads to startling revelations Summary: 5 Stars
Dana and Hugh Clark are extremely excited when Dana gets pregnant. Then unexpectedly their happy life takes a turn for the worst when these two Caucasian people end up having a daughter that has a African-American look. This leads them to find out the source of the African-American descent thinking that it lies in the father that Dana never knew.
What they find is very unexpected and shakes their relationship when it turns out that what they thought was not so, and the last place they expected to find African-American ancestry was the first place they should have been looking.
Overall a very good book
