Book Review: Nice Fantastic Four Book - But Is It Necessary?

Ok, with the release of the new Fantastic Four movie due, we are going to see tons of Fantastic Four merchandise flooding the market. This massive 800+ page volume of the first 30 Fantastic Four comics is a case in point. On the surface it is a nice book which will introduce a reader to the early years of the FF, but is it necessary to own? To answer this, we need to break down the customer base into two categories.
First, if you are the owner of the first three volumes of the Marvel Masterworks Fantastic Four editions, you will have exactly the same reproductions that are offered here. There are a few additions to the Omnibus volume that are not included in the Marvel Masterworks such as the letters page, and a few pages of supplemental material, sketches, drafts ect. So, if you own the first three MM-FF books, you need to decide if you want to shell out the money for the OMNIBUS volume which is 99 percent of what you already have.
If you do not have the Marvel Masterworks editions then you might have your eye on Omnibus, but there is an alternative which is less expensive and more comprehensive. Released a short while ago is 44 Years of the Fantastic Four on DVD ROM! On one DVD ROM disc is presented every Fantastic Four comic cover to cover, through 2004, which can be read using ADOBE ACROBAT 6. This is a companion to the Amazing Spiderman CD ROM set from last year, but they improved upon the original release by using DVD ROM which put the entire Fantastic Four comic run on one disc instead of the 11 CD ROMs needed for the Spiderman edition. The DVD also includes all of the Fantastic Four Annuals. So for a price much less than the Omnibus book, you can have the entire Fantastic Four collection at your disposal. Reading these original comics, complete with all of the advertisements, letters, forums, ect. are a great time capsule of America. So unless you can afford to own all of the originals, the DVD ROM is a must buy.
The only advantage to the Omnibus FF edition is that you can read the first 30 comics in the comfort of your easy chair, (though the book is a bit bulky) rather than reading them from a pc monitor. Personally, I do not think it is worth the price to own the Omnibus edition when the DVD ROM offers you much more for less money. Even Marvel Masterwork owners will want the DVD ROM Fantastic Four disc.
I know that I turned the Omnibus review into a 44 Years of the Fantastic Four on DVD ROM review, but I want to illustrate how buying the Omnibus book is really an unecessary purchase, unless you are the collector type who covets these things. I think they dropped the ball on this one. Had the Omnibus volume been a reproduction of the original 30 comics with the paper and inking quality simulating the look and feel of the originals, include front and back covers and presented this in a bound volume, then we would have had something interesting here (though that might have been realistically difficult to achieve). But no matter, for what we do have in FF OMNIBUS is an attempt to milk the Fantastic Four movie cash cow....Recommended to avid Fantastic Four collectors and those people fortunate enough to have enough disposable income. Eveyone though should check out the DVD ROM!
