Book Reviews of Fantasy LoverBook Review: Fun Summary: 4 Stars
A great series. I docked it one star because the male leads are portrayed as so gorgeous no woman can resist them, which I find irritating, because there should be more than just one woman in the universe who can see past a gorgeous face. Other than that I find the book a wonderful romp with a great plot line. The depiction of various gods is wonderful. It's got a lot of bite, and the various mythological personas are shown as dangerous and powerful, and passionate in both their cruelty and their love. Before anyone get's the wrong idea, this is a "present day" novel series. But our female lead is a sensible practical female who through the meddling of outside forces (in this case Selena, a best friend who works magic) is pulled into a fantastic situation. For her birthday Grace is given a book that contains a "love slave" who if summoned will be at her service for the length of a lunar month. Thinking it's a joke, Grace plays along with her friend's urging to try the spell. When Julian of Macedon appears, she finds out it's no joke. I highly recommend the series for fans of the Xena and Buffy type universes. This book sets up the universe that is full of magical entities that exist in a "regular" world. A great mix of outrageous and over the top beefcake romance, and more gritty fantasy action adventure. Very enjoyable.
Book Review: Ridiculous! Summary: 1 Stars
There are so many things wrong with this book, I don't even know where to start.
Right away I have a problem with a sex therapist who hasn't had sex in years and has never had a satisfying sexual experience. Perhaps she should consider some other line of work?
Then there's the beetlejuice device - speak my name 3 times and I'll appear. Too easy. And what do you do when a greek god appears in your living room? Give him a snack and some pajamas, then go to sleep and go back to work in the morning. In your job. As a sex therapist.
And while you're at work the next morning, your best friend dresses your pet god in little pants and takes him to a flea market, where he is hounded by horney women who are SO STUPID they can't resist a man with hunky muscles. Never mind if they have common interests. Or husbands at home. Or moral values. Because American women, you know, care about visual sexual signals so much they are willing to ignore every other aspect of an adult relationship.
Then there's the cover. Come on, it says right there on page 1, he is "Golden in skin and hair". Not skinny and dark. He looks like a vampire.
Honestly, I can't understand the American reading public. Why is this book such a hit? Is this what passes for literature these days? Have our standards dropped so low? It is embarrassing.
Book Review: If I could give this tripe negative stars, I would . . . Summary: 1 Stars
This odious books is one of the WORSE reads I've ever come across. I am astonished it was published, let alone, rated so highly by other readers.
The characters are comically unbelievable, (physician, heal thyself), and her friend - a Phd reading tarot cards and spouting corny batman-esque cliches ("holy this and holy that").
The constantly repeating of "hissing" and "growling" to denote 'pleasure', was probably the only part that was somewhat entertaining - imagining her "hissing" phrases to him with pleasure . . . picture that one (a cat hissing) and you will be rolling on the floor with laughter . . . at least the first half a dozen time that this descriptor is used (by page 50?) Talk about a mixed signal. After the first 6 or 7 repeated references to this odd behavior, be prepared to roll your eyes at the continued lack of imagination of this author. Soon I was rolling my eyes so much I had to set the book down to stop the nausea.
Since this was a first book for her, I gave her one more shot. BAD choice. The second book was just as consistent as the first one - yes, more hissing, growling and not even imaginative gratuitous sex. Least we forget, again there is NO believable character development, interaction, etc. either.
Save yourself some agony and read Laurell Hamilton instead of this author.
Book Review: Holy Green Guacamole, Batman! Put that book down! Summary: 1 Stars
Whoa. I was actually shocked by how bad this book was. After a long stint of Kresley Cole, I guess I've been spoiled. Regardless, after having other Cole fans recommend Kenyon to me, I expected at least something above a High School level. Let me ... let me just write out one tiny little dialogue scene for you:
"Only on the outside," he said in a voice so low she wasn't sure she heard it.
"What was that?" She asked.
"I'm only human on the outside," he said louder. She caught the anguish in his gaze.
Pfffff. What's that? You didn't hear my emo loud enough? LET ME SPEAK MY EMO A LITTLE LOUDER.
Julian is constantly either whining about his tortured past, or trying to jump Grace, two extremes that don't really sync up. Boo hoo, I'm a sex slave for all eternity! Now let's have sex!
Then there's Grace, the chubby, never-had-an-orgasm SEX THERAPIST that is still tearing up over a college boy who used her and left her. Was his name Jeremiah, and did he work in the library? I think I know that guy! Oh, also her parents died. Yeah, you just keep hitting that Ben & Jerrys to eat away your sorrows.
The worst part about it is that I bought the next 2 books too, and I don't think I could force myself through them. Amazon should require an IQ test before allowing people to leave reviews!
Book Review: He's the perfect lover Summary: 5 Stars
Julian of Macedon, a man who used to strike fear in his enemies just by the mere mention of his name, a man who was fearless and immortal in battle, a man who fought with conviction was trapped into a scroll and condemned to be a sex slave for any women who conjured him out of the scrolls. 2000 years later Grace Alexander has a boring life, until her best friend Selena (who is as weird as her family and beleives in everything of the occult) gives Grace this particular book with the picture of the perfect man inside. Grace does not beleive for a second that by simply calling him Julian will appear in her home and please her anyway she wants for an entire month. However she does it and voila! Julian is in her living room... very much NAKED! As the story evolves we learn about Julian's tumultuos past, as well as Grace's. How the get to know each other and how Grace refuses to use Julian as a lover, just like she was used several years ago in a bet. But in an unlikekly event they fall in love with each other and even before that Grace is convinced that she will help Julian break the curse and set him free. The book is absolutetly wonderful with humor, tenderness, steamy scenes and a painful past so well written I found myself crying for Julian. Ms. Kenyon is a fantastic writter and I will read anything that has her name in it!
