I enjoyed reading this small but greatly inspiring novel. It is based on a poem by Emily Dickinson titled "Feathers". The main character Frannie lost hope because her mother lost two children due to complications in pregnancy, she thinks she is poor, and she does not like the way girls treat her older brother who is death. At Fannie's school they have a new student who is very different from the other students. Some of the boys in her classroom call him "Jesus Boy". One day the boy stood up for himself and fought the biggest bully at their school. Frannie becomes friends with the young man and finds out he is adopted. At the end of the novel Frannie finds hope because her mother is pregnant and has not had any complications, she becomes thankful for her home, and she realizes how much of an impact her brother has had in her life. I would highly recommend this book for someone who may think hope is gone in their life. It may encourage them to look forward and know that there are better days ahead as Frannie realized.
