Book Reviews of Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway

Book Review: Practical help for fear and anxiety
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone struggling with fear or anxiety would do well to read this book. Susan Jeffers has written a wonderful book full of practical advice for overcoming fear and building courage to do what you want to do in life. She does it in a humane way without stigmatizing the person who is suffering. She recounts the story of one person who showed up for her class on coping with fear, and announced that she almost didn't attend, for fear of having a panic attack in front of everyone. Susan then asked her to show the class what a panic attack would look like, and of course, the student was unable to conjure one up. Throughout the book, she tells stories about how people overcame things they were afraid of, and started having fuller lives, using the techniques in the book. One of the main tenets of the book is that fear is not going away, and the only way to get past the fear is to go out and do what you want in spite of the fear. This is not a book you will want to read once and forget about. It is one you will want to refer to time and time again, for reminders on actions you can take to Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway. They are actions you will need to remember to do often, until they become habits.

Book Review: Please Read This!

I was warned that sometimes "feeling the fear and doing it anyway" can be counterproductive, but had no idea it would land me in the ER, which is exactly what happened.

If you are seriously phobic (or just extremely anxious) about something, bullying your way through it might not be the smartest approach. Consider your fears, talk to a professional, and then consider again before following the methods in this book.

After an accident, I became fearful of driving. I talked to a therapist, who told me I should "get right back on the horse." I told her that I wasn't just afraid of another serious accident -- I was concerned because when in a car, I felt confused and light-headed. She dismissed the physical factors and gave me a copy of this book. Five days later I was driving (feeling confused and experiencing some pain), and woke up in the ER. I'd had a minor heart attack, apparently brought on by the panic I'd felt while driving.

So please be cautious when jumping into a technique like the one laid out in this book. Your life could depend on your decision.

Book Review: Excellent to read for basic psychology of things that hold us back
Summary: 5 Stars

This book has been around for a while and is still a good read. Jeffers says it well and in an "everyday" way. It is excellent to read for basic psychology of things that hold us back and how you can move forward in spite of it all. Jeffers helps to understand and label the fear and see it differently so we can move past it.

As a past counselor, I know that phobias and anything that we start to avoid because of a fear or for whatever reason, are the things that start to create psychological baggage as we spend our energy avoiding things rather than working through them. Anything that you find yourself intentionally not doing that is "normal" for most of the world, stop and look at the fear and how it can be getting in your way (not talking about addictions and non-beneficial activities).

This excellent read will serve you in both your personal and professional life. We all have fears; they just show up at different levels and in different ways. Empower yourself to find your fears and move beyond them so you can perform at your peak potential!

Book Review: Confidence 101
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been teaching public speaking classes for over 15 years. My clients include companies like Microsoft, Wrigley, Merrill Lynch, IBM, Unilever and many more. I don't think you'll find anyone on this planet who has recommedned Dr. Jeffers book as frequenstly as I have. (Except for, perhaps, Dr. Jeffers.)

It's a fact that people make judgements about us in moments. In a job interview, for example, studies have shown that 80% of the decision whether or not to hire someone is made in the first 3 minutes! Therefore, it's crucial that we project confidence every waking moment of the day. Even if we don't feel confident.

While I teach the "outer game" of confidence. (In other words how to use certain non-verbal behaviors that project confidence.) Dr. Jeffers' teaches "the inner game" i.e., how to alter your inner thought process from negativity into positivity. Everyone who deals with anxiety, fear and confidence issues, should read this book.
