Hard to explain exactly what went wrong with this book by one of my favorite authors. It starts out brilliantly, with a closely observed account of what happens when a woman wakes up and discovers her husband missing, and then finds out she has no money whatsoever, and he's dead, and he's been keepng secrets from her. It was like the beginning of some lost Charlotte Armstrong novel, and I curled up on my sofa in utter bliss, ready to surrender to Perry the way I have on so many occasions over the years. Hard to say where it went wrong, but right away when I began to read about Hobart, the hired hit man, I felt a tingle of tedium. This deepened on every page he appeared on, and then the rest of the story began to sag having to carry this great leaden weight.
The mystery at first is all about what happened to all of Edith's money? What did Phil do with it? Well, the eventual solution of this mystery is so lame that, frankly, even if the book had been suspenseful throughout, I would still put it down with disgust. Lame isn't even the word.
I kept thinking that there would be a different story, and that Edith would discover that her son, for whom ashe has been mourning for some years, her son Pete who died in a car accident, was somehow murdered and that Phil had tracked down the killer, who then sent a hit man on his trail. That would have had some punch instead of this fantastical story where a wealthy Californian likes 'em young. I love how Edith attracted the erotic attention of two men, Ray and Hobart, but come on, is it believable? Not the way Perryatric writes it.
