Book Reviews of Final Jeopardy (Alexandra Cooper Mysteries)Book Review: Not great. No reason to continue with the series. Summary: 3 Stars
I had two major complaints with this book.
First of all, the way men treated women in the book is pretty sexist and outdated. Maybe it's because the book was written in the 90's but, then again, I don't remember there being so much sexism in the 90's. I found myself getting annoyed with the men in the book over and over. And if I heard the one character say, "Blondie" one more time...
I was also bothered by the ending. The ending is a complete surprise - normally a good thing. But the surprise is almost unfair because there were no hints beforehand that would lead to the ultimate culprit. The whole point of mysteries is for readers to get a bunch of hints about a number of suspects. The author isn't playing fair if all the evidence points to other people and the actual murderer is completely different.
Book Review: Highly Enjoyable Mysteries Summary: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book enormously. It is well written, although tends to get weighed down in detail at some points and I have to admit to skimming some paragraphs. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and wasted no time at all in picking up the next one (Likely to Die). If you like well written mysteries, which keep you guessing, then give this one a try. Linda Fairstein is obviously a very talented woman, in and out of the courtroom and I applaud her and the work that she does. I also admire that fact that she is now writing novels using her extensive knowledge of the system. It is good to see what really goes into procecuting sex crime cases. Final Jeapordy, Likely To Die & Cold Hit are all very entertaining and well written novels. I thoroughly enjoyed each of them and am eagerly awaiting another one from Linda Fairstein.
Book Review: Can I make it a true Daily Double? Summary: 4 Stars
Being a big Jeopardy fan, I loved the fact that there were some Final Jeopardy questions thrown in. :-) Wonder if Alexandra is named for Alex Trebek? Will Jeopardy be a constant theme in all her books?Alex Cooper is a nice character. Wouldn't mind meeting her. Why wouldn't she date that detective though? I'm not sure that was ever clear to me. I mean, after she broke up with her boyfriend, that is. The plot twist at the end was great. Did not see that one coming at all. But I guess I still don't like the boyfriend for what he did. The scumbag! Cooper deserved better. Yes, this is nitpicky, but she claims to be an English major from Wellesley, and yet calls the Alumnae Association the Alumni Association??? Yikes! It's Alumnae because Wellesley is all women! Well, other than that, I mostly enjoyed the book.
Book Review: Interesting setting Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this novel after reading the author's chapter in the round robin mystery, "I'd Kill for That." It is partly a crime story, and partly a mystery, set mainly in New York City and partly on Martha's Vineyard. It is a good story, but the author digresses a bit too much into side cases and seems at times to be getting onto a soapbox.
My main thought, considering all the sex crimes portrayed, don't women ever bite? At the very least, the man's screams would attract attention. And a man dropping his knife and being allowed to pick it back up? Isn't that the time for a swift kick into his private parts? Surely some women would be a little more agressive. Also, the manufacturer of the Black Widow indicates that it is quite effective against muggers.
Book Review: Excellent behind the scenes look at an assistant DA. Summary: 4 Stars
This was a pretty good book. It is an excellent dipiction of what happens in the "sex crime unit" as an assistant district attorney. The story line was pretty decent as well. Alexandra is an assistant DA in the "sex crime unit" in NY. Her actress friend borrows her place on Martha's Vineyard and while she is there, she is murdered. At first the authorities think the murder was mistaken identity (should have been Alex) but as it turns out it wasn't. With a few twists and turns, the book continues nicely coming full circle at the end. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
