Book Reviews of Fire Study (Study, Book 3)

Book Review: Just disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

I was so looking forward to reading this book and had not read any reviews. Instead I had really liked Poison Study, totally LOVED Magic Study, and simply expected another "can not put it down" read. I actually skimmed a lot in the first 200 pages as it was just kind of jumbled and did not hold my interest at all. After Valek finally showed up I got a little more interested, but then it jumped from one thing to another with so many different aspects of magic it lost my interest again. I got so irritated with Yelena running off all the time doing her own thing and risking not only herself but whatever mission she was on at the moment that I didn't even like her any more. I began to wonder what Valek (who is one of my all time favorite book heroes) ever saw in her. They were such a great pair in the other books and in this one I just didn't see it. It is so disappointing when you love books like the first ones in this series and then it falls apart.

Book Review: Yelena's final study
Summary: 4 Stars

Once again this book is filled with action. It picks up where Magic Study left off. Yelena is still in pursuit of Cahil and the soulstealer. But now she's faced with the Flame Warper and he wants her. She still doesn't quite know everything about her magic and what being a Soulfinder means. There's also a traitor in her midst but it doesn't become obvious until it's closer to the end, just when it should. I read this book in 2 days. I was a bit bored with all the action as it seems she's now a leader, she's a great magician (without really seeing what she can do). This book was not rushed as most books in the end of a series are. All the right characters survive to the end and love still prevails. It was a good ending to the trilogy.

On a side note, the best book in this trilogy is the first book, Poison Study (Poison Study).

Book Review: Slightly disappointing end to a great series
Summary: 3 Stars

--Some spoilers--

I have waited for the release of Fire study for a little over half a year after being thoroughly impressed by Poison Study and Magic Study. Maria Snyder is a great author and her character development was superb in the first two novels but Fire study had too many things going on at once.

Also, Tauno's character was not well-developed and his future betrayal was too obvious.

There were witty moments but at times the novel felt contrived...especially Valek's "death" and Yelena's time in the underworld.

Don't get me wrong this is a good book and the ending is sweet. But I can't help but feel let down after such promise was shown from the first two novels.

It's also a dilemma but so many things were repeated that readers of the previous novels already knew (Who opal was, Ferde, Cahil, Valek, The Commander, magic in general). This is necessary for new readers however.

Book Review: Not as good as the first two, but still enjoyed
Summary: 4 Stars

While this was a wonderful wrap up to the Study series, I found myself not as engaged as I was with the first two books. Perhaps the book is not entirely at fault since I was reading it during a hectic time. But, I found myself skimming sections, realizing I missed something important, and then having to go back and reread. There seemed to be lots of traveling around in this book, which seemed to distract from the actual story. Now, there is still some very exciting parts throughout the story. I still loved the characters. I enjoyed discovering what an actual Soulfinder is. I wasn't extremely surprised by the villain, although the extent of the devastation caused was horrible. I still would recommend this series to anyone. I will definitely be reading the Glass series by Maria Snyder. It's set in the same world with one of the characters brough to light in Magic Study (although she's in this one too).

Book Review: Fire Study fizzles with very little spark
Summary: 2 Stars

I came across the first book in the series Poison Study and was delighted that my library had all three books available. Poison Study was pretty good and I was eager to read Magic Study. I barely made it through, but since I knew there was a third book, I persevered.

First I have to admit that when a story isn't good, I tend to start skipping ahead. That might negate this review, but I'll continue on.

The characters were too little and the storyline too big. I began to find reading it to be annoying, and no one wants to be annoyed when they're doing something they enjoy. But I kept on, looking for the ringer that would grab my attention and make it worthwhile. It never came.

I give it two stars only because it seemed to tie up a few loose ends and "finish" the story. I recommend Poison Study, but you can definitely stop there and not continue--you won't be missing anything.
