Book Review: A Lady To Remember

The Ten Boom family was imprisoned for hiding Jews during WW2. Corrie alone survived due to a clerical error. For the rest of her time on earth, her mission was to "tell people that they can come to the Lord Jesus just as they are. Also they must know about the need to forgive their enemies. Then I want to include the fact that the Lord Jesus is coming very soon and that in the meantime, we must live as rich as we are in Him." At five years of age she asked the Lord Jesus into her heart, He came and He never let her down. In spite of age and many health risks, she took every opportunity to speak this message to people around the world. She moved to America hoping to put her message on film so that it could go farther than she could. As God progressed that project forward, Corries' health declined. She suffered a stroke that took her voice. In spite of her silence, people who sat at her bed were blessed knowing she continued to pray for them. God used Corrie even in her silence to reach many. Although she had always wanted to be in her Lords presence, she was content to stay as long as He had need of her. This book speaks loudly of who God is and who Corrie was. I read this book years ago but recently I've used the story of Corrie's life to tell a family member about God. I found myself wondering how accurate my memories were so I purchased two books, one for her and one for me. Thankfully Corries' story is just as riveting today as it was years ago.
My favorite quote comes from Corrie's sister, Betsie who died on Christmas in the Ravensbruck concentration camp in 1944 at age 59.

Pam Roswell Moore had her doubts when she interviewed to be companion of the much-loved author Corrie ten Boom. Corrie's best-selling book The Hiding Place, which recounted how she and her family had hidden Jews during World War II in Holland until their betrayal and arrest by the Nazis, had launched for Corrie a worldwide ministry of travel and speaking. Awed by the spiritual challenge this companionship posed, Pam wondered how she could keep up with the energetic 83-year-old. But God knit a strong bond between the young Englishwoman and the remarkable Dutch evangelist. Then Corrie suffered a stroke. Hospitalization followed; physical therapy; then long, loving hours at home. Corrie regained a little mobility for a time -- until the next strokes hit. She never regained her speech. But the ministry that had touched millions continued as Corrie communicated through her eyes, through elaborate guessing games with those around her, through silent intercession for people God brought to mind.
